Some Love Island fans have admitted they are only just now realising where the inspiration for the current series originated.
ITV has recently celebrated the culmination of the 13th season of the reality series. The popular dating show as we know it has been running since 2015 with an edition running each summer.
At the beginning of its run, there was often a winter edition of the show as well. Over time, this has been replaced with the spin-off Love Island All Stars.
This sees former Islanders enter the villa for a second attempt at finding the perfect partner. While contestants claim that the ultimate goal is finding a special someone while on the show, it has been known to be a springboard a career in social media and television.
More than 10 years since its debut in its current form, the show appears to be more popular than ever. However, some dedicated viewers have only just realised that it was actually based on a similar but very different show.
Taking to Love Island UK's subreddit, one person confessed: " Today I learned that Love Island (2015-current) was actually rebooted from a 2005 series called Celebrity Love Island."
They accompanied their post with a YouTube video, where some of the original episodes have been uploaded. Celebrity Love Island aired on ITV for two seasons in 2005 and 2006.
The main difference from what viewers will recognise today is that the line-up featured 12 single celebrities. They spent five weeks on an island in Fiji with t he winning couple taking home a combined £100,000.
It was originally presented by Patrick Kielty and Kelly Brook, with Fearne Cotton taking over as host in the second series. The original format would see viewers vote for the couple they would like to see in the 'love shack' where the two would get to know one another better.
Essentially, what the hideaway is now but with more pressure for the couple to explore a connection. In the first series, the public would vote celebrities off the island, but in the second, the Islanders had the final say.
The second series also saw contestants cooking and cleaning up themselves in direct response to criticism they were all there for a holiday. Celebrity Love island also saw the use of 'House Guests'.
House guests were not eligible for evictions or winning the cash prize but could be voted into the Love Shack. Guests included basketball player Dennis Rodman, Five singer Abs Breen and Jackass star Steve-O.
Islanders included models, soap stars, pop singers, reality TV personalities and Strictly professional Brendan Cole. Model and son of footballer George Best, Calum Best, and Hollyoaks actor Paul Danan featured on both seasons of the show.
The pair also made a cameo appearance in the first iteration of the revised Love Island when it returned in 2015. Some fans still look back on the first attempt at Love Island fondly with one labelling it as 'iconic'.
Responding to the original post, one claimed that it should return in the fashion of Celebrity Traitors. They commented: "They need to bring it back and have it as an actual celebrity Love Island!!!"
Another agreed: "Yes! when they put in one random celeb like Joey Essex it throws off the whole vibe but I’d be so down for them doing a modern day full celeb cast."
Someone else argued: "Look, you don't need to cast young adults for there to be drama." While one fan looking back admitted: "I remember this being on the TV, it meant it was my bed time."
