Veteran musician T-Pain recently touched on why he decided to sell his music catalog for a rumored $100 million, explaining that he made a strategic family decision.

Per PEOPLE, HarbourView Equity Partners paid T-Pain a rumored $100 million in February 2025 for his publishing catalog and select master rights. T-Pain, whose real name is Faheem Rashad Najm, recently took to Twitch to explain why he decided to sell his music catalog.

The I’m Sprung singer, in the stream, reflected on how he raised eyebrows after he sold his music catalog, as people thought that it would have been financially better if he had held on to his work. Though people thought T-Pain would have constantly earned money by maintaining his work, he begged to differ, saying that his decision was strategic.

“Let me tell you something,” the Grammy winner started. “When streaming started, nobody told us, or nobody came to any artist and said, ‘Hey, we’re about to put your s— on streaming platforms. How much do you want your music to cost?’ Suddenly, out of nowhere and without anybody’s consent, all of our music went from a dollar a song to 0.003 cents per play. Nobody asked us s—.”

“Now imagine that that gets lower and lower as life goes on. My catalog is worth less and less and less and less without any kind of consent from me, without anybody asking me if that’s what I want to charge for my music,” the 41-year-old continued. “You think I want to leave that to my kids?”

T-Pain and his wife, Amber Najm, share a daughter and two sons.

“Out of all this s— that I’ve told y’all that’s happened to me in this f—in’ industry, you think I’mma leave my kids’ life and their future in the hands of the music industry? You got me f—ed up. I’ve got to figure something out,” he explained.

“I’m not leaving my kids’ future in the hands of the music industry at f—in’ all. I know exactly what I want. I know exactly how much I want right now. I know exactly what I would need to live out the rest of my life, and if I get that and I’m satisfied with that and I’m content, I’m not looking for more.”

Following the February 2025 announcement of the sale of his music catalog to HarbourView Equity, the Buy U a Drank (Shawty Snappin’) singer said he was “excited for this next chapter and to partner with HarbourView Equity as they help preserve the legacy of my music,” PEOPLE reported.

T-Pain continued: “This catalog represents years of hard work, creativity, and unforgettable moments, and I’m grateful to see it continue to reach new heights. I don’t plan on stopping anytime soon.”

Sherrese Clarke, the Founder and CEO of HarbourView, also lauded T-Pain, saying that his “visionary artistry and innovative spirit have left an indelible mark on modern music, and we can’t wait to collaborate and amplify his incredible legacy even further.”
