Is there a way to tell whether there's a caterpillar (or worm) inside my just-picked pear, or perhaps a way to get it out? Killing not necessary, I'm okay with sharing. There is a pear tree in my garden and the pears are just about ripe. Today, as I was cutting up one of the pears, I found that the caterpillar who'd eaten a small tunnel into the pear was still inside. I cut around that area carefully, threw his piece back into the garden and ate the rest.
I'm a bit squeamish about fauna in my flora, so I really really want to avoid cutting one of these beasties. I also want to be sure to throw out all the parts that the caterpillar has eaten through. Is there some kind of logic in the direction of the tunnel? It would be nice to minimize the number of cuts so I don't end up with minced pear...
I could try to pick only the pears that don't have any spots, but those are rare and I feel like I might as well eat two half pears and let the bugs or birds have the rest.
