As you may have noticed, Kylie Jenner has just turned 29, and if you didn’t know her exact age, you probably still knew that she recently had a birthday because the photos from her party were frankly inescapable this past weekend.
Even if you didn’t have them all over your feed via Kylie and her friends and family, you’ve likely at least seen the gem-covered birthday cake that she had, because it went pretty viral on social media.
Mostly for logistical reasons, I mean, how do you even eat that?!
And if you haven’t seen any other pics from the event, then you might be surprised to know that they all follow a pretty similar theme: simplistic, gem-covered, and very… Well… DIY.
While the KarJenners are usually known for their extremely lavish and over-the-top parties, this one appeared to be akin to a child’s birthday celebration from the ‘90s, with platters of food served in the kitchen:
Alongside incredibly basic decorations. Like, for example, these helium-filled balloons and cat bunting:
And this gemstone-covered plastic cup, which was definitely hand-decorated by a novice:
At this point, it's worth noting that Kylie did go to lengths to call the event her "pre bday party," suggesting that a more lavish one might be incoming. Still, one TikTok user was so struck by the difference in billionaire Kylie’s party compared to what we’ve come to expect from her and her family that they jokingly called it a “Recession indicator,” adding in the video’s caption: "looks like the economy personally sent her a budget…💀😳💀”
This video caused a bit of a stir, and while it has racked up more than 122,000 likes already, many in the comments disagreed with its sentiment. In fact, it was passionately argued that Kylie was actually “role playing” a “simple/poor” party for fun. Somebody else wrote: "I fear this is just the aesthetic to them,” while one more echoed: “Pretty sure it’s just for the aesthetic not cause she’s broke.”

“girl she's just pretending to be relatable 🙄,” another comment reads, while one more theorized: “it’s not a recession indicator she realized she appeals to the public more when cosplaying as middle class.”
“This is them just cosplaying us normal / poorer people,” somebody else wrote, and another added: “They’re mocking us atp 💀"
While this appeared to be the overwhelming consensus from viewers of the TikTok, some did spring to Kylie’s defense. One person argued: “You guys get mad at them over consuming and now this, you guys are never satisfied.” Somebody else reasoned: “almost certain she’s doing a whimsical girly themed party so she can live out the rest of her 20’s before her 30th birthday, like that’s insanely obvious.”
Another added: “Omg please stop. The amount of waste that comes from every single one of their extravagant events for every birthday/holiday is unimaginable. Please just let her throw a normal birthday party. We should not be encouraging 500 balloons, 1000 party favors, 10,000 flowers, etc.” While one more concluded: “I honestly think she just craves normalcy! And this probably isn’t her only party.”
So, what are your thoughts on Kylie’s low-key birthday celebration? An attempt to be relatable ahead of her big actual bash, or just a gal living out her whimsical dream? Let me know in the comments below!
