Melania Trump‘s sparse public schedule is speaking volumes about how she appears to view the role of first lady, and the numbers are hard to ignore.

The Daily Beast did a deep dive on the number of public appearances she has made in 2026, and they came up with only 38 sightings at official events. The media outlet described her as “one of the least-active first ladies in the country’s modern history.”

Melania was more visible earlier in the year to promote her documentary, Melania, but her “public appearances have shrunk significantly this summer,” with the World Cup Final and the UFC Freedom 250 on the South Lawn of the White House being the more prominent events. Still, the first lady is “more active” this year versus 2025, when she only appeared in public 47 times after Donald Trump’s January 20th inauguration.

Yet Melania’s most remarkable appearance in Donald Trump’s second term will likely be her April 9 impromptu press conference denouncing her association with Jeffrey Epstein.

“The false smears about me from mean-spirited and politically motivated individuals and entities looking to cause damage to my good name to gain financially and climb politically must stop,” Melania said in her prepared statement.

When SheKnows interviewed Kate Andersen Brower, author of First Women: The Grace and Power of America’s Modern First Ladies, in August 2023, she believed that Melania “didn’t want to be the first lady and she was unapologetic about it. Brower added, “She wasn’t interested in doing what we expected of her.”

She thinks that Melania “lowered the bar” for what a first lady needs to accomplish during her husband’s administration, especially since it’s an unpaid, unelected role. “We don’t expect to see or hear from her. If we do, it’s surprising,” Brower said.

Other First Ladies of the United States have chosen to make their mark, whether it was Laura Bush’s literacy platform or Michelle Obama’s initiative to end childhood obesity through movement and better nutrition. Yet Melania could be setting a precedent for future first ladies — they have the choice to be proactive or to pursue their personal interests in the background.

Politics has always been Donald Trump’s ambition. Melania would rather not be in the spotlight.
