Just don’t mention the Corvette ZR1X. This is a car that exists outside of normal parameters and in many ways renders every sports car, supercar or hypercar you can mention as a fluffy, overpriced indulgence. You just bought a GT3 RS to go fast at trackdays? Sorry, the ZR1X will go faster (much, at most tracks) for $150,000 (£112,000) less after dealer markup. But you have an order in for an 849 Testarossa for a hit of insane straight line performance? Well, that’s cool, but the ZR1X’s 5.5-litre twin turbocharged V8 engine has more power than the Ferrari’s entire powertrain, consisting of its own blown V8 and three electric motors. Oh, and it costs $350,000 (£262,000) less.”

Along with news, events, and sales, that responsibility includes combing the internet, curating, and sharing all the ‘Vette-related content we can find, to ensure that our readers are the most informed enthusiasts in the world. Too often, in 2026, this matter consists of YouTube videos that while often fun, is seemingly tailored for the lowest-common-denominator. Every so often, though, we have the pleasure of running across a publication that still trades in the art of the written word. Today is one such occasion, and it comes with the added bonus of being able to read it in a British accent as Jethro Bovingdon recently put pen to paper for the magazine wing of Top Gear after sampling two of the English-speaking world’s greatest road-going automobiles; the Aston Martin Valhalla, and the Corvette ZR1X.

He starts by wondering aloud what exactly Aston’s newest supercar is supposed to compete with? It is constructed around a carbon tub and features an AMG-sourced twin-turbo V8 (817 HP) enhanced by three electric motors for a total output of 1,064 horsepower. It hits 100 kph (62 mph) in a claimed 2.5 seconds on its way to a 217-mph top speed, has a trick active aerodynamics package, and will be limited to 999 units globally at about $1.1 million a pop. Those impressive numbers make the Valhalla somewhat of a tweener – rating higher in the ‘three e’s’ of exclusive, extreme, and expensive than relatively mass-produced exotics like the Lamborghini Revuelto, but not quite in the league of the new ultimate-editions from Ferrari and McLaren (the F80 and W1, respectively).

This situation and all of the F1-inspired tech onboard leads Jethro to the quote above, musing that even at 850k Pounds Sterling, the Valhalla is a bargain… unless you stop to consider the Corvette ZR1, and, more specifically, the hybrid AWD ZR1X that outdoes pretty much every car mentioned while also being daily usable at a fraction of the price. After decades of – sometimes warranted – distain aimed at American cars from the foreign automotive press, and more recently unwarranted dismissal of now excuse-free efforts from Detroit, it’s extremely satisfying to see the Brits, especially Top Gear, now freely admit that anything more than a twin-turbo Corvette is an unnecessary extravagance, an overrated, underperforming exercise in vanity, and an impractical and uncomfortable one, to boot!
