Weird Al Yankovic and Broadway would have been mutually exclusive terms when the quirky singer-songwriter emerged during the 1980s.

Broadway was home to big budget British blockbusters, such as “Cats” and “Phantom of the Opera” during the Reagan era.  Who would have guessed that the amusing Yankovic, who was charting with hilarious mock-ups of such classic tunes as Michael Jackson’s “Beat It” (with “Eat It”) and Madonna’s “Like a Virgin” (with “Like a Surgeon”), would ever land on Broadway? 

But “Dare to be Stupid: The Weird Al Musical” is in the works.

“I can’t say much more about it but it has been announced recently and I’m writing with the gentlemen who wrote the book for ‘Beetlejuice,'” Yankovic said while calling from Evansville, Ind. “I’m working with a guy who is a huge director on Broadway.”

The jukebox musical will feature an array of songs from Yankovic’s deep catalog. It is being written with such heavy hitters as Scott Brown and Anthony King (Beetlejuice and Gutenberg! The Musical!). Alex Timbers (Moulin Rouge! and Here Lies Love’) will direct

But before Yankovic hits the Great White Way, he’ll be touring behind the hits that will draw fans to Broadway.

His “Bigger and Weirder” tour stops at the Borgata on Friday.

Yankovic, 66, doesn’t get enough credit. If crafting music parodies was easy, there would be a myriad of musicians goofing on songs like Yankovic.

The five-time Grammy Award winner has been honing his craft for nearly 60 years.

“I’ve been doing this for such a long time,” Yankovic said. “The more you do something the better you get. When I was writing parodies when I was 8 years old, I wasn’t turning out gold. It took a while to learn how to be funny in song.  A lot of people do parodies but it takes a lot of effort to make a good parody and some people don’t understand that.”

Picking a favorite Yankovic parody is akin to selecting a go-to chocolate bar after opening a bag full of Halloween candy.

It’s difficult but not impossible.

For some pundits and fans, it doesn’t get any better than Yankovic’s hilarious rewrite of Chamillionaire’s “Ridin,” which was transformed into “White and Nerdy” in 2006.

Yankovic’s rapid rap goes way over the the top when it comes to dweeby caucasian proclivities.

“That was an easy one for me to write since I’ve been white and nerdy my whole life,” Yankovic cracked.

The video, a huge weapon Yankovic has wielded since the early 1980s (Who wasn’t blown away by the aforementioned “Eat It” and “Like a Surgeon”?) has increased the inventive entertainer’s profile.

Yankovic tabbed Donny Osmond, who scored a chamillion points for being a great sport throughout the “White and Nerdy” video.

“I thought it was going to be a lot of fun and I was right,” Osmond said while calling from Las Vegas. “Weird Al is one of the most inventive individuals in the business. When I saw what he was going to do with Chamillionaire’s ‘Ridin,’ I was on board.”    

Osmond went the extra yard.

His silly improvised dances, which helped make the video uber popular, cracked up everyone, including Yankovic.

“He’s amazing,” Yankovic said. “When a celebrity is asked to make a cameo in a video the budget is relatively low. They normally don’t get paid. You’re asking for a favor. We didn’t know he was going to bring it like he did. When he performed our jaws were on the floor. We were like, ‘Wow.’ He gave 100 percent.”

The same can be said for Yankovic when it comes to performance and curating the set list.

“When I put the songs together I think about what songs I have to play so fans won’t be disappointed,” he said. “I also include deep cuts and personal favorites.”

It’s been quite a career for Yankovic, who not only has a huge legion of fans but those he has parodied are part of his base.

After Yankovic turned Nirvana’s “Smell Like Teen Spirit” into “Smells Like Nirvana,” Cobain wrote that Yankovic is “The one true American pop genius” in one of his journals.

Foo Fighter frontman/former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl told Rolling Stone that he knew that he made it once Yankovic parodied Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit.” Joan Jett, Sting and a number of other luminaries were proud of Yankovic’s offbeat takes on their songs.

“I remember being floored years ago when Paul McCartney actually knew who I was,” Yankovic said. “It’s been incredible.” 

Life could have been very different for Yankovic, who grew up playing the accordion and later earned a Bachelor’s degree in architecture from the California Polytechnic State University. 

“I can’t imagine what my life would have been like if I pursued a career in architecture,” hesaid.

Architects aren’t known for being funny. Yankovic is hilarious.

“What I do just comes naturally to me,” he explained. “But it’s still hard work.”

It’s paid off with an extraordinary career that has come with some cool perks.

“Most of my friends are comedians,” he said. “I get to hang out with people like Eric Idle, who is a good friend. I grew up admiring him and it’s just amazing. What I’ve experienced is beyond my wildest dreams. I’m very fortunate.”
