Maybe it’s difficult to talk about in the sense that it gets a lot of backlash, in which case the people you’re talking to are racist. But people often say it to mean “ah yknow it’s a difficult subject so I won’t spend too much time on it”. It’s an excuse to briefly gesture towards it so no one can accuse you of not, and then not mention it again. It’s really cowardly and dishonest. Rice is/was a cultural staple in the Carolinas because of slavery. Because much of the economy of the United States was built off of slave labour, especially in agriculture. The rice industry collapsed after the civil war because it was built on slavery. This is not much different to cotton or tobacco. The history of agriculture is incredibly intertwined with the history of slavery, including in the modern day.It’s not a “difficult subject” unless your audience are going to get angry at you for acknowledging slavery and its continued effects. In which case your audience are racist and you have fostered a racist audience. It’s so much worse to act like it’s an inconvenient thing no one can talk about than to just fucking talk about it honestly and in depth (rather than just going “it’s hard to talk about but we need to acknowledge it” and then leaving it at that). You can’t act like you’re telling the hard truth that’s difficult to talk about when you’re deliberately censoring yourself in a way that upholds the exact same attitudes about slavery. It’s “difficult” because it’s been made that way and because you frankly don’t really want to have to talk about it.
