The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum officially welcomed three new members into the institution Sunday.

Carlos Beltrán, Andruw Jones and Jeff Kent were all enshrined during the induction ceremony in Cooperstown.

When Beltrán stepped up to the podium to deliver his speech, he compared it to the first time he was at bat in his first Major League Baseball game.

“While I feel excited to be here, but at the same time I feel very nervous,” Beltrán said.

While that at-bat was with the Kansas City Royals, playing in New York as a Met, Beltrán said, shaped his life.

“It was here where I experienced my greatest success, and some of my greatest challenges,” Beltrán said. “Playing for the Mets made me a better man and a better leader.”

That growth in the Big Apple is why Beltrán is the just third player to represent the Mets in the National Baseball Hall of Fame.

“It's a shared passion, a time spent with family and friends. For others, it's an opportunity. And for me, it was just a simple plan of a college education and a better way of life for my family,” said Kent, the first of the three to deliver his speech at the Clark Sports Center.

“Getting that phone call, the most memorable moment of my time. There's no greater honor to be here in baseball,” Jones said.

In his speech, like his counterparts, Jones thanked all those who helped him through his baseball journey — family, friends, teammates and coaches like longtime Atlanta Braves manager Bobby Cox, who died earlier this year.

“He put a 19-year-old in the World Series lineup, and believed in me,” Jones said of Cox. “Bobby had confidence in me and helped me become the best player I could be.”

Kent call his speech a eulogy to his baseball career, while trying to hold in emotions for this honor that he can only describe as overwhelming.

“This day isn't about me, though. This day is about baseball. The celebration of baseball, and I just happen to be a part of it,” Kent said.

During their careers, all three played against each other, and at times even with each other as teammates. But they played the game, as Kent would say, the “right way.”

“This game gave me more than a career,” Kent said. “It gave me lessons that I carry beyond the field. Discipline and accountability and work ethic, and always believed how you play this game matters.”

Beltrán, the last of the three to deliver his speech, echoed similar sentiments to close out his speech.

“It was about preparation. It was about humility. It was about relationships,” Beltrán said. “Those things will last longer than any statistic ever will."
