Merged yesterday to the ReactOS code-base is initial support for Job Objects, which is an important milestone in the road to being able to run more modern Windows software under this open-source operating system striving for Windows driver/application compatibility.

Job Objects in the context of the Windows kernel are kernel primitives to allow groups of processes to be managed/controlled as a single unit. Job Objects are used for handling of resource limits, collective termination, security restrictions, etc. This is needed for modern Windows apps like web browsers for handling of sandboxing as well as being used by various services and daemons. This pull request was merged on Saturday for adding basic support for jobs within the ReactOS kernel. This work has been a long time coming with the original Job Objects code for ReactOS dating back nearly a decade.

The Job Objects code now in place for ReactOS targets the pre Windows 8 functionality and does leave some features not yet implemented but gets the basic support working. See the aforelinked pull request for all the details.

ReactOS posted the good news on X and the important milestone toward being able to run modern apps like web browsers ont his platform.

This follows other recent progress on ReactOS like the first Windows NT6 system call in working toward Windows Vista application compatibility. This summer ReactOS also hit the milestone of being able to run the game Half-Life 2.
