Sony still hasn’t settled on a launch date for its unannounced PlayStation 6, according to Sony CEO Hiroki Totoki. Ongoing component shortages and rising hardware costs continue to complicate plans for its next console.

Totoki confirmed the company’s current stance on hardware release in a new interview with The Wall Street Journal. While much of the conversation focused on Sony’s ongoing shift away from traditional consumer electronics and toward entertainment, Totoki also briefly addressed PlayStation’s future.

According to the report, Sony has yet to determine when the PlayStation 6 will launch. Analysts previously pointed to 2027 as a potential release window, but ongoing global component shortages have reportedly led some to reconsider those expectations. “Considering that importance, we need to take some action,” Totoki said while discussing current market challenges. “Otherwise, we cannot survive in this landscape.”

This isn’t the first time Sony has pumped the brakes on PS6 launch speculation. In May, Totoki said Sony hadn’t decided on either a release window or pricing for its next console. At the time, he specifically pointed to memory prices, which the company expects to remain high throughout fiscal 2027 due to ongoing supply constraints.

Sony’s challenges aren’t unique. Demand from the AI industry has put additional pressure on memory and other components used across consumer electronics, potentially making next-generation gaming hardware considerably more expensive to manufacture.

Pricing could consequently become another major hurdle for PlayStation. Sony currently sells the PS5 Pro for $1,099.99 CAD, already placing its most powerful console considerably above the traditional price range for new gaming hardware. Some analysts have suggested the next generation of consoles could reach $1,000 USD (approximately $1,380 CAD), although Sony hasn’t indicated what it intends to charge for the PlayStation 6.

Totoki’s latest comments come as Sony undergoes a broader transformation. The company has increasingly shifted its focus toward entertainment businesses such as PlayStation, music, anime and film while moving away from areas that once defined the Sony brand, including televisions and other consumer electronics. Entertainment now accounts for roughly two-thirds of Sony’s revenue, according to the Wall Street Journal.

For PlayStation players, though, the takeaway is straightforward: despite years of rumours about a 2027 launch, Sony still isn’t ready to set a date for PS6. With component prices remaining volatile, the PS5 generation may have more runway than previously expected.
