The U.S. House Minnesota Republican delegation recommended Stuart and former Minneapolis police union president Bob Kroll for the job. President Donald Trump nominated Stuart, and the U.S. Senate confirmed him and seven other U.S. Marshals and 13 U.S. Attorneys on Monday.
Stuart began working for the Anoka County Sheriff’s Office in 1994, and served as sheriff from 2011 to 2023. He has most recently been Minnesota Sheriffs’ Association executive director.
“I believe in service above self,” Stuart said in a statement Tuesday. “During my career, I have been privileged to serve our citizens at the local and state levels and am honored to keep serving Minnesotans at the federal level.”
Stuart will take over from Eddie Frizell, who was U.S. Marshal for Minnesota for four years. Frizell was previously Metro Transit police chief. He started with the Minneapolis police in 1993 and rose through the department’s ranks.

The U.S. Marshals Service is responsible for fugitive investigations and the protection of the federal judiciary.
“A hallmark of Marshal Frizell’s tenure was his proactive stance on judicial safety,” said a Tuesday statement from the U.S. Marshal’s office. “By leveraging his background in municipal police administration, he overhauled security protocols and strengthened the protective shell surrounding federal judges, personnel, and facilities.”
Frizell oversaw the full implementation of body-worn cameras across the district.
Under Frizell’s leadership, the U.S. Marshal’s North Star Fugitive Task Force “demonstrated fearless devotion to duty during the horrific Annunciation Church and Senator Hortman/Hoffman shootings,” the statement said. “Frizell’s ability to coordinate federal resources with local partners ensured a seamless, high-velocity response to these threats against public figures and institutions.”
