Stephen Graham has revealed that he lost his Golden Globe trophy less than a day after he won the gong for his gripping performance in Adolescence.

The actor, 52, scooped the Best Actor award for playing a devastated father struggling to grapple with the aftermath of his 13-year-old son's arrest for the murder of a female classmate.

He beat off competition from the likes of Jason Isaacs and Walton Goggins, while his co-stars Owen Cooper and Erin Doherty also won in the Supporting Actor categories and the hard-hitting Netflix drama landed the top prize for Best Limited TV Series.

However, after celebrating his win by dancing the night away with his wife Hannah Walters at the star-studded afterparty, Stephen admitted that he then lost the golden statuette the very next day.

He made the confession during an appearance on Capital Breakfast with Jordan North, Chris Stark and Sian Welby on Monday morning, alongside his A Thousand Blows co-star Malachi Kirby.

He explained how he'd had to jet off to Madrid the day after the ceremony and had dashed to catch a flight from Los Angeles that had a layover in Atlanta.

'I had like thirty-five minutes to catch the plane and it’s a next level kind of thing,' Stephen recalled.

'As I come off the plane a woman’s stood there with me name and she took me down the stairs and threw me in a car and drove me across the actual airport, you know, on the runway.'

An impressed Jordan said: 'Oh, you’re fancy!' while Sian gasped: 'That’s like president status that, isn’t it?'

The Thousand Blows star humbly acknowledged: 'It’s ridiculous! But all I’m thinking is my case isn’t gonna make it.'

He continued: 'And I went “excuse me love, there’s no way you’re getting my suitcase on this plane if I’m in a car now.”

'And she’s like “Oh no, don’t worry we’ll take care of it.” And I’m like “no, no, no you don’t understand.” And she went “I promise you I promise you".'

However, just as he had feared, the suitcase failed to land, with the actor's belongings, toiletries and most importantly, prized trophy, left behind in Atlanta.

Chris prompted: 'And what was in the case?' as Stephen replied: 'Me socks, me pants, me toothbrush and all that...' before sheepishly adding: 'And a Golden Globe.'

The studio erupted in gasps and commiserating groans, as an aghast Jordan accused: 'Oh, you left it!'

But Stephen furiously defended himself from blame for the mishap, insisting: 'No, I never left it! I put it in me case! It’s heavy, I wasn’t carrying that on me hand luggage'.

Fortunately the star revealed that the crisis was soon resolved, as he was reunited with both his suitcase and coveted award after a couple of days.

'But thankfully it turned up two days later,' he said, causing Jordan to breathe a sigh of relief and declare: 'Oh, thank God!'

As he took to the stage at the Golden Globes earlier this month to accept his award, Stephen sweetly credited his ongoing awards season success to Hannah, 51, their two children and his parents.

The couple also co-executive produced Adolescence, while Hannah also had a role in the drama as teacher Mrs Bailey.

And her emotional husband used his acceptance speech to declare she had 'saved his life' when she became his wife in June 2008.

Stephen described her as 'one of the most best producers ever and a woman I'm very, very lucky to be married to.'

He added: 'I've said it before, but you saved my life. You saved my life. And to my two beautiful children, Grace and Alfie, I love you to the moon and back forever.

'My dad, my pops, my hero, and I would just like to dedicate this particular award to my mom and all my friends and family, you all know exactly who you are. Without you, none of this is possible.'
