Finally, justice for Wile E. Coyote (and his movie).

Coyote vs. Acme is finally almost here. After many years in "development hell," the new comedy follows Wile E. Coyote as he sues Acme for all the faulty products he's used over the years in his attempts to catch Road Runner. The film's journey to the screen has been a wild ride worthy of a whole documentary in itself, so buckle up as we take you through its entire timeline.
It started back in 1990, when writer Ian Frazier wrote a satirical story called "Coyote V. Acme" for The New Yorker, which imagined a court case in which Wile E. Coyote seeks compensation for the injuries and suffering Acme's products have caused him. The article was first picked up for film in 1998 by Scott Rudin Productions, but Warner Bros. would not grant permission to use its characters in a movie, and the option lapsed in 2006.
Fast forward to 2015. Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn pitched a movie based on Ian's article directly to Warner Bros., and they gave him the green light. He hired his friend, screenwriter Jeremy Slater, to write the first draft of the script, but Warner Bros. rejected it. "It just wasn’t what they were looking for at that time," Jeremy said.
Then, in 2018, Warner Bros. hired Jon and Josh Silberman to write the script, with Dave Green to direct. At some point, the Silberman brothers dropped out of the film, and in 2020, Samy Burch (who later wrote May December) was brought on board to write the script.
In 2022, John Cena was cast as Buddy Crane, the Acme lawyer who serves as the movie's antagonist, while Will Forte was cast as Kevin Avery, Wile E. Coyote's lawyer, and Lana Condor was hired as Paige Avery, Kevin's niece.
Filming finally started in March 2022 and wrapped up that May. It cost $70 million to make, and was set for release in July 2023, with early test audiences responding positively. Then, Warner Bros. released Barbie in July 2023 instead, and Coyote vs. Acme seemingly fell into production limbo.
In November 2023, news broke that Warner Bros. wasn't going to release the movie at all, in order to use it as a $30 million tax write-off (something they'd done the previous year with the Batgirl movie). The filmmakers expressed their disappointment over the decision, with director Dave Green saying he was "beyond devastated," and editor Carsten Kurpanek stating, "This erasure hurts on a personal level."
Within days, Warner Bros. apparently decided to allow the filmmakers to shop the film to other distributors rather than can it altogether. By February 2024, reports indicated that Warner Bros. had rejected bids from Netflix, Amazon, and Paramount, and the movie fell into limbo once again.
Finally, in March 2025, Ketchup Entertainment bought the worldwide rights to the movie for a reported $50 million, and announced plans to actually release it for real. Coyote vs. Acme made its official big-screen debut at San Diego Comic-Con in July 2026, and is set to be released in the United States on August 28, 2026.
After so much anticipation, it's safe to say audiences will be sat to view the movie that almost never saw the light of day. It looks like it'll be a lot of fun and, with a current Rotten Tomatoes score of 95% fresh, it seems it's well worth the wait. You can watch the trailer below.
