If you’re a Corvette fan, here’s the part of the story that matters most: a Torch Red C7 Corvette coupe stolen out of Louisiana has been found — and saved — thanks to sharp investigative work in Texas.

The Hays County Sheriff’s Office announced last week that deputies recovered the stolen C7, which had been fitted with a swapped VIN in an attempt to disguise its identity. The car was located during a broader investigation that also uncovered multiple stolen trailers, equipment, and a motorcycle — many with VINs scratched off or ground away.

For Corvette owners, the recovery is a reminder of two things: thieves are getting more sophisticated, and law enforcement is getting better at spotting the tricks.

The Torch Red C7 was originally reported stolen in Louisiana. When deputies found it, the car carried a fraudulent VIN — a common tactic used to hide stolen high value vehicles.

Investigators were able to confirm its true identity through additional verification methods and return it to the rightful case file.

All were found with altered or missing identification numbers.

A swapped or damaged VIN is a major red flag, and buyers who don’t check can end up with a stolen vehicle without realizing it.

The Corvette community knows how painful theft can be — but this case is proof that recovery is possible, even when thieves tried to erase the evidence of the crime, sometimes years earlier.
