For Overstreet Knox, headlining one of Deep Ellum’s storied venues is a dream come true, and it’s just the beginning.
“It’s crazy that we are playing Trees. I mean, what a historic, iconic venue,” Jack Lambeth said.
Lead singer Griffin Vail, drummer Jack Lambeth, bassist Luke Hill and guitarist Jack Poncy will play their debut album, “Is it Good for The Company?” at Trees on Saturday.
The rock band has come a long way from jam sessions tucked inside a soundproofed shed to living together and writing their first album.
“We first started this album process a year ago, and we knew nothing,” Vail said. “We came from a little baby shed. We were green, naïve.”
After their 9-5s, the band would jam and write songs in the small studio space inside their house. Despite following traditional paths of earning degrees and landing corporate jobs, the musicians couldn’t let go of their dreams of making music.
“That’s why this thing started in the first place. Is that we couldn’t let go of that what if, and we wouldn’t be able to live with ourselves if we didn’t at least give it a try, you know,” Lambeth said.
That dream became more rooted in reality when Grammy Award-winning producer and audio engineer Tre Nagella, who runs Luminous Sound in Dallas, took a chance on the four-piece band and helped them record their debut album.
“This was the hardest thing any of us have ever done. Hardest emotionally, time-wise, effort-wise, financially,” Poncy said.
Most songs started with a single riff or lyric that the musicians would build off of. In the process of writing the album, the band said they wrote about 30 songs and spent hours laying tracks and perfecting the sound.
“Is it Good for The Company?” features 13 songs touching on themes of yearning, jealousy and escapism.
While the band has played most of the songs live over the last year, Saturday the crowd will get to hear the entire album.
“I just want them to see the beauty that we see in it,” Hill said. “We’re really proud of the product we put together. You know, it’s got all of our blood, sweat, and tears in it.”
The album will be officially released this fall. As for what’s next, the band hopes to keep turning this dream into reality.
“I think initially when we play this weekend, I want them to understand that this is real, and that this is not just a silly little dream,” said Lambeth. “It’s like we are going for it, and we are going to do everything in our power to make sure that we can achieve this.”
