We’ve recently released a collaborative cover of Kyuss’ “One Inch Man”. Like all of our previous recordings, we’ve made it entirely by ourselves. It’s one of our favorite Kyuss’ songs and we decided to make it. And, again EHX effects were key for sculpting the guitar and bass sound.
As for the bass tracks, we used a complete Ampeg B2RE head + 4 x10″ Ampeg cab. Two microphones (an AKG 112 for the lowest freqs and an AKG D40 for the midrange). The bass effects were sparse. In addition to the amplifier saturation, we used a MXR DI in eq+mild distortion for verses. And for the bass parts of the chorus and the guitar solo sections, we used a 70’s EHX Hog’s Foot Bass Booster. The bass guitar was a Fender Marcus Miller set to active mode.
Regarding the guitar tracks, we made a different approach:
– Two layers of Fender Jazzmaster guitars in C Standard tuning that were used to record the entire song. Each of these layers consisted of: guitar -> wah -> 70’s EHX Deluxe Big Muff (Blend Version) -> EHX Deluxe Memory Man (big box reissue) -> Vintage Orange OR120 + Sovtek MiG100 routed as follows:
a) First layer: DMM Direct Out routed to Orange OR 120 and panned left, DMM Echo Out to Sovtek MiG 100 and panned right. The Blend knob of the DMM was maxed.
b) First layer: DMM Direct Out routed to Sovtek MiG 100 and panned left, DMM Echo Out to Orange OR 120 and panned right. The Blend knob of the DMM was maxed.
– A third layer of Fender Jazzmaster guitar in D Standard tuning that was used to record the entire song. This layer consisted of: guitar -> wah -> 70’s EHX Deluxe Big Muff (Blend Version) -> EHX Deluxe Memory Man (big box reissue) -> Vintage Orange OR120. The Blend knob of the DMM was set to 8 o’clock.
– Two layers of Fender Jazzmaster guitars in Baritone A Standard tuning that were used to reinforce the choruses and the rhythm part of the two guitar solos and other two layers of Fender Jazzmaster guitars in D Standard tuning for the same purpose.
c) The Baritone A Standard layer (panned left) and the D standard layer (panned right): guitar -> 70’s EHX Deluxe Big Muff Parallel/Series (in Series mode) -> EHX DMMM -> Vintage Orange OR120. The Blend knob of the DMM was set to 9 o’clock.
d) The second Baritone A Standard layer (panned right) and the second D standard layer (panned left): guitar -> EHX Big Muf Pi USA Reissue EC-3003 Rev E -> EHX DMMM -> Sovtek MiG 100. The Blend knob of the DMM was set to 9 o’clock.
The Orange OR120 head was plugged to a 2 x 12″ custom cab loaded with Eminence Kappa subwoofers. And the MiG 100 head was plugged to a 2 x 12″ Hiwatt-style cab loaded with two Weber speakers. And the used microphones were a SM-57 (for Weber speaker) and the AKG D40 (for Eminence Kappa speaker).
The Big Muff versions, seasoned with the distinctive character of Deluxe Memory Man have helped us to get a decent approach to Kyuss-tone of their late era, albeit not identical, but proving that Big Muff is still a valid choice for stoner rock riffing and soloing.
