The late actress’ spokesperson also criticized those fueling the “gossip and speculation” around the actress’ sudden death

Hayden Panettiere’s rep said there was “much more” to the story surrounding the actress’ sudden death and called out those fueling “gossip and speculation” in a new statement shared with Us. 

The statement did not single out any rumors in particular, but suggested they were coming from people “not close to Hayden” and who know “very little” about what happened. “It is deeply disrespectful to her memory and to those who knew and loved her and are actively grieving this tremendous loss,” the rep said.

Panettiere died Aug. 16 at the age of 36. An exact cause of death still hasn’t been released, though in previously released dispatch audio, authorities referred to an “overdose” and “cardiac arrest.” The investigation so far has not turned up any signs of “foul play or suspicious circumstances,” while an initial autopsy found “no signs of trauma” that would’ve resulted in her death. 

Amid the swirl of rumors, Panettiere’s rep called on those who might have “legitimate information that could be helpful” to contact law enforcement instead of “turning to social media to speculate publicly about something you do not fully understand.” 

The rep went on to state: “There is much more to this story than what is currently being discussed publicly, and those closest to Hayden are actively cooperating with the ongoing investigation to help ensure that the truth comes to light and that justice is properly served.” (The rep did not immediately return Rolling Stone‘s request for further comment.) 

The investigation remains ongoing, with one recent report noting that the Drug Enforcement Administration is assisting local authorities in Greenville, South Carolina. Last week, Panettiere’s on-again-off-again boyfriend, Brian Hickerson — who had called 911 and was present when the actress was found dead — issued a statement through his lawyer. 

“Hayden’s death remains under investigation and it is important to allow that investigation to proceed,” the statement read. “As has been publicly reported, police confirmed there were no signs of foul play. Out of respect for Hayden’s loved ones and the ongoing investigation, there will be no further comment at this time.”
