The Dolphins handed De’Von Achane a four-year extension and, with it, told the rest of the roster what the offense is built to run through now.

Achane said the new Miami leadership told him from the start that a trade was off the table and that the offense would be built around him. The words land harder than the dollar figure.

When a new coach and front office take over, productive veterans often slide into wait-and-see status. Achane got the reverse.

In 2025, Achane piled up 1,838 yards from scrimmage and 12 touchdowns while leading the NFL at 5.7 yards per carry, the second-most scrimmage yards in franchise history, for an offense that still finished with the seventh-fewest yards in the league. Across three seasons he has averaged close to 100 scrimmage yards a game with 35 touchdowns in 44 appearances.

The extension runs four years and $64 million, up to $68 million with incentives and $32 million guaranteed, a $16 million average that ranks third among running backs behind Saquon Barkley and Christian McCaffrey. Miami organized its offense around the one proven volume creator it already had.

Some medical management is attached. Jeff Hafley confirmed Achane was not a full participant in OTAs while rehabbing a shoulder that needed a cleanup procedure after last season, limiting him to individual drills and running rather than full team work. He is expected back without long-term concern.

A team centering a player has no reason to overextend him in late May. Miami is preserving the back it just made central.

Achane steps into a new leadership group alongside new starting quarterback Malik Willis and a heavily reshaped supporting cast. With Tyreek Hill released and Jaylen Waddle traded to Denver, the receiver room thinned to Jalen Tolbert, Tutu Atwell, Malik Washington and a class of rookies, and the offense will have to operate more directly.

Achane is the plan. The rest of the offense now has to make that bet pay off.
