LVMH-owned Champagne house Krug is opening a Los Angeles recording studio to paying guests.
Announced Sept. 14, The Art of Blending Krug & Sound runs for three evenings at Larrabee Studios, on Sept. 28, 29 and 30. Each session puts a small group inside Studio 6, where their reactions to the Champagnes are turned into an original composition written on the spot.
“Music has this extraordinary ability to translate sensations and emotions into another language,” said Julie Cavil, chef de caves at Krug, in a statement.
Composed in the room
Mr. Marroquin, a 14-time award winner, leads the sessions with producers Scott Tibbs, Nick Rosen and Mike Bennett. The group interprets what guests describe across the evening into a single piece, a process the house likens to the assemblage behind its own blends.
Les Créations de 2013, comprising Krug 2013 and Krug Grande Cuvée 169ème Édition, anchors the tasting. Chef Oscar Torres of VERSE is serving a multi-course menu paired with further pours, among them Krug Grande Cuvée 173ème Édition and Krug Rosé 29ème Édition.
Reservations opened Sept. 14 through Tock, with a limited number available for each evening.

The program continues past the three nights. VERSE and neighboring restaurant Mensano are running a month-long Krug Grande Cuvée pairing from Mr. Torres.
“Partnering with Krug gave us the opportunity to invite guests into that process, where every conversation, every shared moment and every glass of Champagne becomes part of the music we’re creating together,” said Manny Marroquin, mixing engineer and owner of Larrabee Studios, in a statement.
The house has paired Champagne with music for years, most recently with composer Max Richter, who premiered cuvée-inspired compositions in London (see story).
