The Iowa City West volleyball team hosted a tournament Thursday night, with Dowling Catholic, Cedar Rapids Kennedy and North Polk in attendance.

West started the night against Cedar Rapids Kennedy, fighting back and forth for the ball. The first set they lost 25-19. Coming back with more momentum in the second set, they won 25-19 and they kept fighting but lost the last set 15-11. 

Throughout the first game, two of the Trojan’s starters, Cyan Blommer ’29 and Sophia Austen ’27, achieved nine kills, contributing to the team’s total of 31 in the first game. 

West faced off against Dowlic Catholic in their second game, ready to fight for a victory. 

The first set the Trojans started off with a 25-20 win, but fell in the second set to Dowling at 25-18. In the final set, the Trojans were able to restart their engine and defeat Dowling Catholic 15-11. The win meant a lot for West’s players, as Dowling is one of the top teams in the state.

Lila Eastvold ’27 collected 27 assists during this game, helping the team work together to win.

Finally, West swept North Polk in the last game, ready to collect another win for the night. In this match, the Trojans were ready with their defensive game, with top players Lila Eastvold ’27 and Taylor Otte ’28 both gaining three blocks against the team helping the team’s total of seven. They defeated North Polk 25-18 in the first set and 25-22 in the second. 

The team fought hard on defense the entire night, collecting 132 digs across the three games. 

The team also recognized an accomplishment from junior Izzie McDonald for reaching 500 digs throughout her high school career. The team celebrated with a poster covered in photos.

Looking ahead, the Trojans will host another tournament against several schools on Sept. 12 in the West High main gym.
