The State Cabinet, at its meeting in Mangaluru on Friday, approved the setting up of a government medical college in Puttur at an estimated cost of ₹549.79 crore.

The college will come up at Sediyapu in Bannur village of Puttur taluk.

The State government had announced the opening of the college in Puttur in its 2025-26 Budget when Siddaramaiah was the Chief Minister.

The government, in June this year, appointed a Special Officer to take the proposed project forward.

The Directorate of Medical Education appointed R. Lohit Kumar, Associate Professor, Department of Forensic Medicine and Nodal Officer, National Medical Commission (NMC), Chikkamagaluru Institute of Medical Sciences, as the Special Officer for the project. The Special Officer has been tasked with preparing the feasibility report for the project, proposals on the infrastructure and human resources required, and the financial estimates, and submitting them to the government.

Earlier, the government had given administrative approval for the construction of a 300-bed hospital building for the college at a cost of ₹180 crore. The approval was for the civil works of the five-storey building. The Finance Department, too, has approved the proposed project.
