AUBURN — The Edward Little volleyball team has only played at the varsity level for three years, so it remembers the teams that have had its number in the past.

One of those teams, until Tuesday night, was Deering.

“We were all coming into this kind of knowing that we lost to (Deering) the last two years, actually,” said Edward Little senior Sarah Ebersole. “And we were just very ready, especially the people who’ve been here for a couple of years; we were so ready to play them again this year with some new people.”

The Red Eddies’ preparedness showed as they finally knocked off the visiting Rams, prevailing in four sets in a Class A clash.

“We’ve been working so hard on our energy, especially in the gym, and just staying consistent with our passing and our serving, and I’m just so happy with how we played today,” Ebersole said. “I thought it was amazing.”

Edward Little (4-2) notched a close first-set win, 25-22, which laid the foundation for the rest of the match. 

At one point during the second set, which the Red Eddies won 25-14, Ebersole tallied four consecutive aces. 

“A lot of games, our serving is really what’s keeping the energy up, and it keeps us alive,” Ebersole said. “We consider ourselves a really consistent and good serving team, so we really pride ourselves on that and we really take pride in getting aces like that.”

Sierra Reynolds, who finished with four aces — three in that second set — and Mallory Johnson, who had one ace, also contributed to the Red Eddies’ strong showing from behind the service line. 

Deering (4-3), ranked eighth in the Varsity Maine poll, took the third set, 25-18. The Rams’ primary power hitter, Blake Gayle, had two aces.

In addition to her strong serving, Reynolds set up Ebersole for the final kill of the match.
