Tennessee revenues exceeded budgeted estimates for the month of August. Department of Finance and Administration Commissioner Jim Bryson reported that total August tax revenues were $1.7 billion, $54.6 million more than the budgeted estimate and $88.1 million more than August 2025. The total tax growth rate for the month was 5.48 percent.

General fund revenues were $45.2 million more than the August estimate, while the four other funds that share in state tax revenues were $9.4 million more than the estimates.

“August tax collections surpassed our budgeted expectations for the month,” Commissioner Bryson said. “Sales tax revenues, which reflect July’s taxable sales activity, exceeded expectations and continued to show steady growth. Corporate tax revenues, reflected in franchise and excise tax collections, also performed well. While fuel tax revenues fell below expectations, all other tax categories combined met expectations and showed favorable growth.

"We are encouraged by the start of the new fiscal year and remain cautiously optimistic about continued growth. We will closely monitor economic activity to ensure that our monthly budget estimates are met.”

Individual tax performance compared to August 2026 Budgeted Estimates:

  • Sales Taxes: Above estimate by 2.73% or $35.5 million
  • Corporate Taxes (Franchise & Excise): Above estimate by 57.02% or $24.1 million
  • Fuel Taxes: Below estimates by 7.27% or $8.2 million
  • All other taxes: Above estimate by 1.74% or $3.2 million

Individual tax performance compared to August 2025:

  • Sales Taxes: Up 3.94% or $50.7 million
  • Corporate Taxes (Franchise & Excise): Up 118.46% or $36.0 million
  • Fuel Taxes: Down 7.28% or $8.2 million
  • All other taxes: Up 5.38% or $9.5 million

The budgeted revenue estimates for 2026–2027 are based on the State Funding Board’s consensus recommendation from November 24, 2025, which was adopted by the second session of the 114th General Assembly in May 2026. These estimates also incorporate any revenue changes enacted during the 2026 General Assembly session. Monthly estimates for fiscal year 2026–2027 are available on the state’s website.
