The Maple Leafs don’t think they’re cutting the schedule too close with a self-inflicted three-day, cross-continent trip just before next week’s back-to-back season-opening home games.

The team flew five hours to Phoenix on Thursday afternoon for a day and a half of fun and intramural games, to be followed by a Saturday afternoon practice (Mountain Time).

After jetting home, Sunday is a day off with one final practice before facing the Montreal Canadiens and New York Islanders at Scotiabank Arena.

“You might say ‘ahh, Arizona, that’s so far,’” coach Jim Hiller told reporters. “(But) our captain lives there and I know he has some plans for the guys. The weather’s pretty good. We’ll take it, enjoy it, and the positive that comes with it. 

“There’s always time to laugh a little bit, less loose a little bit. Any time you have this many new faces, coaches and management included, to get a chance to get away, wherever it might be, is always good.” 

Hiller added that the Leafs just had four straight days of practice and split-squad games, so he has no problem letting them kick back away from the rink, media and their bosses. 

“It works out really well,” he said of creatively filling a five-day window from their last exhibition games until Tuesday’s National Hockey League launch.

That match against the Habs heralds four straight home games until Oct. 6. 

Toronto will then be back in the U.S. Southwest to face Vegas, Colorado and Utah.    

PTO defenceman Nick Blankenburg and injured forwards Nick Paul and Dakota Joshua made the Arizona trip.
