In factory form, the AMG versions of the Mercedes Geländewagen are not exactly transportation for meek types who like to avoid the spotlight. Sure, the G has the powertrain to climb mountains, but it’s possibly even better at the social type of climbing, rolling up to the valet with a woofle of authoritative V-8. Like a bodyguard with an earpiece, it’s big, blocky, and imposing, and it lets the world know that a VIP just showed up.

Of course, if some is good, then more must be better, right? That’s certainly the unwritten motto of German über-tuner Brabus, which has spent decades churning out cars that are anything but shy. Hot on the heels of its Bodo coupe concept, here’s the company’s take on just how extreme the G-class can get.

It's called the Brabus 800 Cabrio, and it's the open-topped G-class for those who want to drive around in the wheeled version of a giant neon sign saying, “Over here, look at me.” It comes in two variants, is covered in carbon-fiber bodywork, features an interior with more cowhide than Montana, and as for the cost—well, let’s just ask comedy legend Mike Myers.

Dr. Evil: “One million dollars!”

That’s more than four times the cost of the standard G63. It would theoretically be cheaper to have a team of them pulling you around in an old-fashioned wagon, like they were a German V-8-powered horse team.

Still, owners of a Brabus 800 Cabrio won't want for power, not with an 800-hp version of Mercedes-AMG's twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8. Additional performance enhancements include a blow-off valve system for more loud noises, and exhaust tips that light up red. For some reason.

The standard 800 Cabrio rides on huge 24-inch monoblock wheels, and despite all its heft, can sprint to 60 mph in under four seconds. Retracting the top takes a little longer, at 20 seconds, but it’s also a part of the performance.

The higher-riding flavor of 800 Cabrio is called the XL, and it comes with a full-on portal-axle system that raises ground clearance to 18.9 inches. It's built up as more of an off-road-ready package, but let’s be serious for a second. The only way this thing is getting any mud on its tires is if it accidentally runs over an unwashed Subaru Crosstrek.

Only 50 of these outrageous convertible G-classes will be built, and you can probably expect to see one cruising around Beverly Hills or some other suitably swishy real estate. Is the Brabus 800 Cabrio completely over the top? It is indeed, and that’s exactly the point.
