The saga of the second-generation Tesla Roadster is practically worthy of its own book at this point—or at least, it might be, if the story had reached a satisfying place to wrap things up. The car that was first teased back in 2017 has seen its actual debut pushed back repeatedly in the years since, with company representatives keeping hope alive by dropping occasional breadcrumbs about it in interviews and on social media.

Earlier this month, Tesla promised that the new Roadster will finally, actually, for real this time, be unveiled on October 1, 2026. And to show just how serious the company is, it’s reopened the reservation list for anyone who wants the new electric sports car—and has $50,000 they’re willing to put down ahead of time.

For the record, as Tesla’s own Roadster reservation page spells out, only $5000 of that has to be sent to the company today via credit card payment. The remaining balance of $45,000 must then be issued via wire transfer within 10 days, so if you were hoping to rack up a ton of credit card points on this reservation, tough luck. The deposit is refundable, but as the likes of Sam Altman and Marques Brownlee have pointed out, getting your Roadster money back hasn’t always been easy.

Tesla CEO—sorry, “TechnoKing”—and otherwise fairly visible human Elon Musk has made plenty of wild claims regarding the new Roadster over the last nine years, starting with the launch event’s declarations of a 0-60-mph time under two seconds, a 250-plus-mph top speed, and a 620-mile range and eventually graduating to claims that it will offer SpaceX-inspired thrusters for added propulsion that could let the car hover or even fly. Whether any or all of those bold statements turn out to be true should be revealed on the evening of October 1 in Texas. Or, perhaps, later?
