Russia insists on the immediate release of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, and on preventing similar incidents in the future, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said during the general debate of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly.

"At the beginning of this year, in violation of all norms, including moral norms, the United States’ invasion of Venezuela ended with the capture of President Maduro and his wife and their extrajudicial detention in a US prison," he said. "We insist on the earliest possible release of the Venezuelan leader and his wife and on preventing such incidents from recurring in the future.".
