All-inclusive breaks are a favourite among British holidaymakers seeking a real disconnect from reality – but as many of us know all too well, they can come with a price tag to match.

However, there are a number of holiday destinations where all-inclusive breaks are actually cheaper than most bed and breakfast hotels.

New research from TravelSupermarket, a leading holiday comparison site, has revealed the destinations where upgrading from bed and breakfast to all-inclusive costs next to nothing – and the three where it actually costs less.

Analysis of average three-star holiday prices across more than 60 destinations shows the gap between the two board types varies enormously depending on where you go. 

The first destination on the list? Marrakech, Morocco.

In Marrakech, the average seven-night all-inclusive holiday works out at £348 per person against £479 for bed and breakfast – 27 per cent cheaper for food and drink all day. 

Malta follows, with a week all-inclusive averaging £518 per person against £565 on B&B, a saving of £46. 

Egypt comes in third, with an all-inclusive break to the popular spot working out £9 cheaper, at £605 per person.

Beyond those three, a handful of destinations charge so little for the upgrade that a couple of rounds at the bar would cost more than a week of everything included.

Phuket ranks fourth, where an average week's all-inclusive costs just £15 more per person than the average B&B – a difference of under 1 per cent. 

Bodrum is fifth at £7 more for the week, Sri Lanka sixth at £51 and Turkey's Antalya Area seventh at £20, each adding roughly 1-3 per cent to the price of the holiday.

Spain's Costa de Almería ranks eighth, where seven nights all-inclusive costs £47 more per person, followed by Menorca in ninth at £66, and Crete in tenth at £56. 

All three add between 7 per cent and 9 per cent to the week's average price.

At the other end of the scale, the average price of going all-inclusive climbs sharply. 

Sardinia tops the list, with a week all-inclusive averaging £1,873 per person against £818 on a B&B basis – an increase of £1,055, or 129 per cent. Florida ranks second, adding £1,300 per person for the week, a 118 per cent jump.

Aruba is third, where paying for an all-inclusive break costs £1,593 more per person for seven nights, an 80 per cent increase, while the Athens area ranks fourth at £470 more, or 77 per cent. 

Abu Dhabi completes the five, where all-inclusive trips add £818 per person for the week – 71 per cent on top of the B&B price.
