Scotland boss Sebastien Pocognoli has challenged his players to deliver a 90-minute performance that can electrify the Hampden crowd when they take on Switzerland on Tuesday night.

In his first match as the country's new head coach, Pocognoli's reign got under way with a 0-0 draw against Slovenia in their Nations League clash in Ljubljana yesterday.

The Scots looked disjointed during a ropey first half but were vastly improved after the break, dominating the second half and creating multiple clear-cut chances.

Although they were unable to find a winning goal, the nature of the performance in the second half was far more in keeping with what Pocognoli wants to deliver long-term.

At the end of the match at the Stadion Stozice, the Scotland fans showed their appreciation for the positive display and gave the players a good reception.

It will be a much stiffer test in Glasgow against a Switzerland team who reached the World Cup quarter-finals in the summer, but Pocognoli has urged his players to use the power of the crowd.

'We created chances,' said the 39-year-old Belgian. 'We had a good amount of chances in the second half from what we worked on during the camp.

'First half, we created two chances from crosses. We had a chance with Oli (McBurnie). We had a nice chance for (Kieron) Bowie, just from a long ball in transition. We had worked on this.

'Second half, I saw what I expected. We can sometimes be more direct on the ball but in that second half we reached a lot of what we had worked on.

'There were small details we had worked on through the week. The second half gave me a good feeling but we want more, we want 90 minutes.

'I was watching them (the fans) because I need to learn. In the first half, we got what we expected because we could not play forward and you heard it (from them).

'We were away from the first line, we could not produce the second pass and you hear the crowd's frustration.

'The way they supported us in the second half is because we brought the energy and I said to the lads: "If we can produce this against Switzerland, maybe the last details will come from the crowd. They will bring energy".

'As long as we continue to create chances, you bring the fans alive. If we can produce the second-half performance at home, I think it will be okay.

'I think the crowd was positive at the end because we produced something that they wanted to see. At least we attacked and they did not have the feeling that they travelled for nothing.'

Scotland missed a glut of chances against the Slovenians, most notably in the second half through McBurnie and substitute Bowie.

It was McBurnie's first cap in five years and, although he is yet to score for the national team in 17 appearances, Pocognoli insisted he was happy with the striker's overall performance.

'He played a good game,' said the Scotland boss. 'In the first half when it was difficult, he was swimming to find a position but in that moment you give up or you stick together to fight for the team.

'Don't get me wrong but in that [negative] moment I was also looking at the attitude of my players. Oli never gave up.

'In the second half, it was my job just to bring more discipline in the pocket on the left-hand side. That is my responsibility, also, that Oli had to do a lot in the first half.

'I cannot be negative about this game because he missed a chance. The fact he is disappointed is good but he has to move on. He showed that he is proud and hungry to be here.'

Pocognoli set Scotland up in a 3-4-1-2 shape which meant there was no place in the starting XI for Ben Gannon-Doak.

The young winger came off the bench in the second half and made a positive contribution as Scotland battered the Slovenians.

The head coach is confident that Gannon-Doak will fit into his system, whichever shape he chooses to play.

He also believes the same will apply to Scott McTominay once he returns to the squad later this year.

Asked whether it might be difficult to accommodate Gannon-Doak, Pocognoli said: 'No, it will not be difficult. It is a process. At his club he also needs to settle.

'He is young and he needs to play more for his club. He is a top, top kid first of all and a top player and a game-changer, and we don't have a lot of those.

'That is why Josh McPake is also with us because I want more of that. Maybe in the future if those two make the step we can be open to exploring many shapes.

'I think in that wide position in the shape we had in Slovenia, it is risky to start Ben, because we have to know that sometimes you can be beaten in transition.

'The pattern on the ball can sometimes be bad and then it is not the game for Ben. But when we have good control on the pitch, like in the second half, that becomes his game.

'It was nice that in that kind of game he showed he can also react in transitions because that is the trigger for him.

'But he can also play in the ten in that shape, or he can play in various positions if it is a back four. At Bournemouth he is also inverted sometimes.

'I am flexible (with team shape) but I wait for the right moment. I also have the concept to play with one-v-one players, that is a different shape. It is a question of time.

'They need to reach the international level. I am already adapting to the quality of the team. We have a strong midfield so we maybe have to secure a little on the depth so maybe a back five is good.

'It doesn't mean we are low or that we can't press. Step by step we will adapt.

'In terms of McTominay, he can play in many positions. He is a top player so he can read the game. We will see. November is coming.

'For now we just need to put the structure in place. I hope Scott watched the game and thought "okay, I see myself in that shape in the second half" and that with good discipline he can enjoy it.

'I hope he can look and think: Yeah, I want to play". Andy (Robertson, captain) was really positive after the game that he really enjoyed it. It is really good to see that from top players.'
