The retailer announced the supercentre's opening back in December 2024, with other locations in Edmonton and Calgary planned for the coming years

Empty shelves, bright yellow ‘clearance’ signs and an array of markdowns line the aisles of the Walmart on Hospital Street in downtown Fort McMurray, as employees prepare to make the big move to the new store in a few weeks.

The retailer announced plans to expand its business across Alberta, building new stores in Edmonton, Calgary, and Fort McMurray as well as other modernization and renovation projects across the province.

Sept. 2025 marked the building of the new 142,000-square-foot store, which Walmart said will be “Fort McMurray’s first Walmart Supercentre.”

The new supercentre, which is listed as a major provincial project, will offer a full grocery assortment as well as the general merchandise, pharmacy and everyday essentials. It will also offer convenient pickup and delivery from the store.

The province defines ‘major projects‘ as private and public sector projects in Alberta which are valued at $5 million or more.

Fusco shared that the project is part of “Walmart Canada’s broader $6.5 billion investment to strengthen our store and supply chain network across Canada.”

“We’re excited to bring Fort McMurray customers an even better shopping experience and look forward to welcoming them to the new Supercentre,” she said. That excitement appears mutual, with some residents taking to social media to fish out sneak peaks of the construction in-progress and share their hopes for what the new store could offer.

When asked about transitioning current employees, Fusco said that “all current associates were offered the opportunity to work at the new location;” and that the new store is “continuing to hire for a variety of roles, including produce associates, cashiers, fashion associates and more.” Candidates who are interested are invited to apply at Walmart Canada Careers.

The new store will be located in the Parson’s Creek neighborhood of Fort McMurray and will officially open its doors on Oct. 22.

While Walmart said its current downtown location will close as soon as operations move to the new supercentre in Parsons Creek, it is yet to be confirmed what will become of the old store.
