Cerebral Palsy—a Symptom Rather Than a Diagnosis

For decades, cerebral palsy (CP) has been defined as a clinical syndrome rather than a single disease. Characterized by disorders of movement and posture resulting from disturbances in the developing brain, CP has traditionally been viewed through the lens of obstetrical and neonatal injury. Clinical evaluation focused primarily on identifying prematurity, hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy, stroke, congenital infection, or other acquired insults. Once the clinical diagnosis was established, the search for an underlying cause often ended.
