Ali Wong and Da'Vine Joy Randolph have proved to be unbeatable as they landed the top acting honors  at the 39th Film Independent Spirit Awards 2024 held at the Barker Hanger in Santa Monica, California on Sunday amid a very successful Awards Season run.

The 41-year-old actress Ali not only triumphed individually but also led Beef to earn the best television show award while Da'Vine earned Best Supporting Performance for The Holdovers on an afternoon where Past Lives earned the top film prize.

Ali earned the coveted Best Lead Performance in a New Scripted series for her work on limited Netflix series Beef just hours after triumphing at the Screen Actors Guild Awards.

She beat out a large field which included co-star Steven Yeun in addition to Emma Corrin, for A Murder at the End of the World, Dominique Fishback for Swarm, Betty Gilpin for Mrs. Davis, Jharrel Jerome, for I’m a Virgo, Zoe Lister-Jones, for Slip, Bel Powley for A Small Light, Bella Ramsey for The Last of Us, and Ramón Rodríguez for Will Trent.

During her acceptance speech Ali said:  'Oh man, Steven, Sonny, Jake, and the rest of the cast and amazing crew of Beef, I wouldn't be here without you. This is the best.

'It has been such a wonderful journey with you guys and I'm so proud that you guys are my friends too. And gosh I really want to give a special shoutout to our catering Mario's. 

'Sonny is going to be so mad at me for letting out the secret that they are like the best but they really have the best food and they really kept the morale going. We had such long days and just thank you so much. This means a lot. Thank you.'

The Independent Spirit Awards have concluded an incredible Awards Season run as she earned top acting honors at the 2024 Screen Actors Guild Awards, 2024 Critics' Choice Awards, 2024 Golden Globe Awards, and perhaps most important the 2023 Primetime Emmy Awards for Beef.

Ali's big win helped pave the way to Beef earning the top television honor Best new Scripted Series.

It beat out Dreaming Whilst Black, I’m a Virgo, Jury Duty, and Slip.

The highly-popular Netflix series was centered around Ali and Steven's characters who let a road rage incident burrow into their minds and slowly consume their every thought and action. 

Da'Vine Joy Randolph kicked off the event as the 37-year-old actress earned Best Supporting Performance for her work in The Holdovers.

She beat out an impressive and massive field including: Erika Alexander for American Fiction, Sterling K. Brown for American Fiction, Noah Galvin for Theater Camp, Anne Hathaway for Eileen, Glenn Howerton for BlackBerry, Marin Ireland for Eileen, Charles Melton for May December, Catalina Saavedra for Rotting in the Sun, and Ben Whishaw for Passages.

 Da'Vine praised the independent film industry in her acceptance speech as she said: 'The Holdovers is a beautiful testament of what can happen when a small group of passionate people are given a chance to come together and tell the story.

'Independent films are the beating heart of this industry, and they are worth fighting for.' 

Da'Vine has proved to be unbeatable - and may be considered the favorite to win the Oscar - as she has earned major Awards Season wins at the Screen Actors Guild, Golden Globes, and Critics' Choice Awards. 

In the film she portrays Mary Lamb who is the head cook at Barton Academy boarding school and is a bereaved mother.

Past Lives ended the night on top as the film earned Best Feature triumphing over All of Us Strangers, American Fiction, May December, Passages, and We Grown Now.

Director Celine Song  shared some heartfelt words as she accepted the prize saying: 'I’ve been tasked with the amazing opportunity to speak on behalf of these amazing, incredible filmmakers up here.

'I feel so honored to be here to talk about this movie that we got to share with you.'

Earlier in the night the 36-year-old filmmaker was recognized individually for the feature as she earned Best Director.

She triumphed over Andrew Haigh for All of Us Strangers, Todd Haynes for May December, William Oldroyd for Eileen, and Ira Sachs for Passages.

Past Lives is centered around Nora (Greta Lee) and Hae Sung (Teo Yoo), two deeply connected childhood friends, are wrested apart after Nora's family emigrates from South Korea. Twenty years later, they are reunited for one fateful week as they confront notions of love and destiny. 

Jeffrey Wright was also one of the biggest winners of the night as he earned the highly-coveted Best Lead Performance Award for American Fiction.

The 58-year-old American actor stood on his own above a very stacked talented field including Jessica Chastain for Memory, Greta Lee for Past Lives, Trace Lysette for Monica, Natalie Portman for May December, Judy Reyes for Birth/Rebirth, Franz Rogowski for Passages, Andrew Scott for All of Us Strangers, Teyana Taylor for A Thousand and One, and Teo Yoo for Past Lives.

He received the honor from presented and fellow actor Colman Domingo as he it the microphone and first commented: 'To receive this from you, Colman, man, is just a beautiful gift.

'It’s funny, you go to these award shows, you kind of grow tired of them. And then you get one, it kind of changes the vibe a little bit.'

The film also earned a Best Screenplay award for Cord Jefferson.

The 42-year-old filmmaker was recognized over  David Hemingson, for The Holdovers, Laura Moss for Brendan J. O’Brien, Birth/Rebirth, Emma Seligman and Rachel Sennott for Bottoms, and Celine Song for Past Lives

In American Fiction, Jeffrey plays a novelist who's fed up with the establishment profiting from Black entertainment uses a pen name to write a book that propels him into the heart of the hypocrisy and madness he claims to disdain. 

Nick Offerman was recognized in the Best Supporting Performance in a New Scripted Series category for his work in The Last Of Us.

The 53-year-old veteran actor beat out an impressive field including his castmate on the HBO series Murray Bartlett in addition to Billie Eilish for Swarm, Jack Farthing for Rain Dogs, Adina Porter for The Changeling, Lewis Pullman for Lessons in Chemistry, Benny Safdie for The Curse, Luke Tennie for Shrinking, Olivia Washington for I’m a Virgo, and Jessica Williams for Shrinking.

He began his speech saying: 'Thanks to HBO for having the guts to participate in this storytelling tradition that is truly independent — stories with guts.'

Nick then referenced his episode of The Last Of Us as his character Bill had a romantic relationship with Murray's character Frank.

He said: 'When homophobic hate comes my way, and [someone] says, "Why did you have to make it a gay story?" We say, because you ask questions like that. It’s not a gay story — it’s a love story, you a**h***.' 

Nick was not the only star of The Last Of Us who was honored as young star  Keivonn Montreal Woodard was recognized in the Best Breakthrough Performance in a New Scripted Series category.

The 11-year-old actor triumphed over Clark Backo for The Changeling, Aria Mia Loberti for All the Light We Cannot See, Adjani Salmon for Dreaming Whilst Black, and Kara Young for I’m a Virgo.

 Woodard — who is deaf — played a young deaf apocalypse survivor named Sam.

Another young star who was recognized was Dominic Sessa who earned Best Breakthrough Performance for his work in The Holdovers.

The 21-year-old actor beat out Marshawn Lynch for Bottoms, Atibon Nazaire for Mountains, Tia Nomore for Earth Mama, and Anaita Wali Zada for Fremont.

In the film Dominic stars as as Angus Tully, a Barton student 'held over' (i.e., left on campus) during Christmas break. 

Saturday Night Live star Aidy Bryant hosted the the soiree.

The red carpet of the  39th Film Independent Spirit Awards was star-studded just one day after the Screen Actors Guild Awards.

Jessica Chastain looked incredible in an electric blue mermaid-esque gown that featured cut-out details and a leafy design. 

Natalie Portman kicked off the red carpet in style, opting for a red mini skirt and matching cropped jacket with three-dimensional roses on it. 

Anne Hathaway was a vision in a white sequin jumpsuit with silver embellishments.

Michelle Williams looked chic in her multi-colored sixties-inspired mini dress, adding eye-catching gold calf-length boots. 

Jessica, 46, stunned in her midnight blue number, which had nude cut-out details throughout.

The gown had a striking neckline, and featured leafy shapes throughout the look before becoming a fringe detail.

She paired the stunning number with her long red locks loose and in wavy, opting for a deep side part.

Jessica painted her pout a pink lipstick with a touch of rosy blush on her cheeks beneath smokey eye makeup.

Natalie, 42, showcased her toned legs in a two-piece set, which consisted of a cropped cardigan that flashed a hint of her torso and a matching skirt.

Both the top and the bottoms had large three-dimensional roses throughout, paired with matching strappy heels and a small round gold clutch.

Natalie pulled her brunette locks back and sported tiny gold earrings for a delicate touch.

Anne, 41, looked gorgeous in her sleeveless, high-neck sequin white jumpsuit, which also had silver embellishments.

The beautiful actress styled the one-piece with diamond rings and her long brunette hair loose around her.

She sported a freshly trimmed fringe, which perfectly highlighted her beautiful facial features.

Michelle sported a long-sleeve colorful mini dress featuring crystal buttons and a crystallized accent along the waist.

The actress styled the look with gold and black boots and a statement round diamond ring. 

Nominations were announced back in December, with American Fiction, May December, and Past Lives leading the pack with five nods each.

Nominees came from over 27 different countries with budgets ranging from $10,000 to $28 million. Nominees were determined by the Spirit Awards Nominating Committees using the following guidelines: uniqueness of vision, original and provocative subject matter and economy of means. 

'Of all nominated writers, directors, producers and technical artists, 40% are women and 32% are BIPOC (Black, Indigenous and People of Color). Among the nominated performers, 49% are women and 40% are BIPOC. And of all 2024 nominees, 42% are women and 34% are BIPOC,' a press release for the organization states. 

The nominating committees for the show are made up of writers, directors, actors, cinematographers, editors, critics, film festival programmers, casting directors, and other working professionals in the film industry.  

'This year, the Spirit Awards nominating committees are 56% female, 3% Nonbinary, 3% Transgender, and 49% BIPOC; 29% identify as LGBTQ+ and 3% identify as people with disabilities (PWD),' the release adds.
