PHOENIX — Biotrue OneDay contact lenses could be a suitable daily disposable option for patients switching from monthly replacement schedules, according to a poster presentation at Optometry’s Meeting.

The lenses also showed low rates of adverse events in a pooled analysis of three studies totaling more than 300 patients.

The findings came from studies presented by Karen R. Hoffman, OD, of Orange Park Eye Center, Florida, and Marjorie Rah, OD, PhD, FAAO, director of medical affairs at Bausch + Lomb.

Biotrue OneDay lenses (nesofilcon A, Bausch + Lomb) contain polyvinylpyrrolidone, “a polymer that allows the lens to maintain 78% water, which is the same as the human cornea,” Hoffman told Healio.

To learn about patients’ experiences transitioning to this lens from less frequent replacement schedules, Hoffman and Rah conducted a case series of 10 patients who switched to nesofilcon A from monthly lenses. The study included data from patient visits between November 2014 and March 2025.

Patients reported switching lenses for better comfort, more convenience, better visual stability, improved ocular health, reduced overwear, an option for seasonal or vacation use, and decreased allergy signs and symptoms.

Prior to lens fitting, seven of 10 patients had best corrected visual acuity of 20/20 or better. That increased to nine of 10 patients at the most recent follow-up visit, while one patient had 20/20-1.

To evaluate the safety of nesofilcon A, the researchers pooled data from three 3-month studies comparing it with other daily disposable lenses: hilafilcon B (SofLens, Bausch + Lomb), etafilcon A (Acuvue, Johnson & Johnson) and kalifilcon A (Infuse, Bausch + Lomb). Toric versions of both lenses were used in the study comparing nesofilcon A with etafilcon A.

The overall analysis included 676 eyes of 338 patients wearing nesofilcon A lenses. Patients wore the lenses for an average of 13 hours per day.

The incidence of adverse events was “low,” and no slit lamp findings greater than grade two were recorded at any scheduled visit, according to the poster. There were no serious adverse events.

“Although silicone hydrogel lenses help a lot of patients, it’s nice to know that we have that hydrogel lens available with a good safety profile to use in real-world practice for our patients,” Hoffman said.
