The CEO of T5 , a development company set to build what could eventually become the second largest data center in Illinois by square footage, spoke exclusively to NBC 5 Monday amid an outcry of opposition from local residents.
“We haven’t hidden behind anything,” Peter Marin said.
A group of residents called the Lake County Data Center Opposition Coalition has sued to block the project, claiming the village wasn’t transparent about the project during public meetings.
“it wasn’t out in public. It wasn’t open,” said coalition leader Morgan Coghill. “It wasn’t on the agenda of the Grayslake like town meeting. And because they knew it was going to be a problem.”
In a statement, Grayslake mayor Elizabeth Davies says there were 18 public meetings and “Every one of those meetings and hearings was open to the public, publicly noticed, and on the record.”
The village has put out a fact sheet online assuring residents the project won’t increase power bills, and will bring in $1.4 billion in tax revenue over the next 20 years.
Martin says the company has communicated directly with residents through public meetings, as well as pamphlets and billboards.
“We did everything by the book,” he says.
The Grayslake facility will be large enough to house companies that build generative AI, but activists opposed to the project say there has been a lack of specifics.
“Who’s the tenant? Is it Anthropic? Is it OpenAI? Is it going to be a swarm of AI agents pouring out from this data center to attack our government websites?” Coghill asked NBC 5.
Martin says the Grayslake data center will operate on a closed-loop system, which means it will rely more on power than water to cool the computer servers inside.
The project is slated to consume up to 1.2 gigawatts of energy once all phases are complete, which is the equivalent to powering a city of about one million residents.
Marin says T5 has a separate rate agreement with ComEd, and will be effectively paying for all the power it consumes, but coalition members say they aren’t buying that argument.
“All they do is tap into the same grid we’re all using, and they’re getting their electricity,” said Coalition member Michael Smith. “And we’re being told, ‘hey, throttle down your electricity use during hot summers because we’re taxing the grids.'”
Martin says the Chicago region is attractive because Illinois is a high power-producing state and he believes the grid can easily handle the influx of data centers. And he says if communities here say no, data centers will just go somewhere else.
“Data centers are in every part of your life from, you know, from 911 to the grocery store to shopping online, whatever you interact with, everybody touches a data center every day,” he said.
The two sides are set to meet in court in November, but preliminary site-evaluation has already begun on the land. Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker has urged Illinois lawmakers to pass the so-called “POWER Act” when they return for their fall veto session that month. The legislation would put strict new limits on a data center’s water and power usage.
The coalition members were unswayed by Marin’s explanations, but told NBC 5 they had one remaining question for him: would he personally want a data center of this size in his community?
“Yeah I’d be fine with it,” he said. “You’re not going to see the building. You’re not going to hear anything that’s going on.”
