President Trump acknowledged the difficulty of navigating immigration policy during a Hispanic Heritage Month event at the White House. He described the issue as the most challenging task he has faced while in office. “Frankly, it’s the hardest job that I’ve had,” Trump said. “They’ll say you’re too tough or you’re too soft. Get tougher, get softer. No matter what you do, it’s always tough.”

As reported by The Hill, this admission highlights the ongoing pressure surrounding border policy. Despite his comments on the difficulty of the situation, the President emphasized his administration’s efforts to control the border. He claimed that over the last 17 months, no one has been able to enter the U.S. illegally. This contrasts with data from Customs Border Protection, which reported that over 12,000 people crossed the Southwest border in August.

During the same event, Trump encouraged Hispanic and Latino voters to participate in the upcoming November elections. He praised the community, calling them an unbelievable and special group of people. He also noted that they have been with him from the beginning. While this group provided a significant boost to his 2024 presidential election victory, recent trends suggest some of that support is cooling off.

He says Hispanic and Latino voters are a special group of people

The shift is reportedly particularly visible in key regions like Texas and Florida. A May survey from UnidosUS indicated that 20% of Hispanic voters in Florida who supported Trump in 2024 stated they would not vote for him again. Similarly, a September poll from the Cook Political Report and TelevisaUnivision found that 18% of Latinos in Texas who previously backed him no longer do.

Trump: "25 million people walked across the border. Many of those people are not people you would want in this country. Frankly, it's the hardest job that I've had because they'll say you're too tough or too soft, no matter what you do. But we've been very strong." pic.twitter.com/CowIesOOLl

Internal friction within the party is also reportedly becoming more apparent. Earlier this month, Rep. Maria Elvira Salazar, a Republican from Florida who is currently running for reelection, released an advertisement filmed directly in front of the White House. In the clip, she addressed the President regarding his immigration policies. She was very direct about the growing frustration she observes among his supporters.

“The same Hispanics who helped you get to the White House in 2024 feel betrayed today,” said Salazar in the new clip. She did not stop there, as she offered a specific vision for how the President could shift his approach to better align with these voters. She suggested that he could take a more constructive path that focuses on dignity rather than just enforcement.

“You can be for immigration what Lincoln was for slavery and Reagan was for communism,” the Republican continued. “I’m not talking about giving them amnesty. I’m talking about giving them a dignified life in this promised land.”
