Orvil Gene Grimes was booked at the Clark County Detention Center on a count of open murder with use of a deadly weapon.
A 76-year-old man accused of shooting and killing a man in east Las Vegas this week was seen throwing away clothing that resembled items worn by a suspect captured on surveillance footage near the time of the killing, according to his arrest report.
Orvil Gene Grimes was arrested and booked at the Clark County Detention Center on Wednesday on suspicion of open murder with use of a deadly weapon. Grimes was booked under the same Metropolitan Police Department event number issued in connection with the discovery of a body in the 1200 block of South Eastern Avenue, near Charleston Boulevard, at 1:46 p.m. Tuesday.
Police were called to 1205 S. Eastern Ave. by a city code enforcer who reported an unhoused man, identified in the arrest report as Henry Bias, lying in a nearby parking lot unresponsive. Police and medics arrived and pronounced the man dead.
The next day, police reviewed surveillance footage from a business at 1208 S. Eastern and said the video showed Bias in the area of the shooting at 8:36 a.m. Tuesday, according to Grimes’ arrest report.
At 10:17 a.m., police said a suspect — described in the report as a white man wearing a tan sun hat, long-sleeved white T-shirt, light-colored shorts and dark shoes — walked into the parking lot of 1205 S. Eastern, and a gunshot could be heard shortly afterward.
“The suspect then walked away from the scene, northbound on Eastern Ave.,” the report said.
Police said in the report that a coroner investigator found Bias was shot and a 9 mm cartridge casing was found in the parking lot near Bias’ body. Bias, 46, died from a gunshot wound of the chest, according to the Clark County coroner’s office.
Report: Grimes matched description of suspectDetectives tracked the suspect as he walked from the shooting scene to a Las Vegas address that was redacted from the report. Police said the suspect then removed clothing and placed the items into a bag or cart.
Additional canvassing for video revealed the suspect had a short white beard, police said. While conducting a follow-up investigation on Wednesday, a detective saw Grimes, who “appeared to be concerned” and matched the description of the suspect, but was wearing different clothing.
Investigators soon began conducting surveillance, according to the report.
During surveillance, police said Grimes was seen getting into a 2005 blue four-door Chrysler while carrying a white bag. Police said Grimes drove to a convenience store, threw the white bag into a dumpster and drove away, according to the arrest report.
Police later stopped Grimes and placed him under arrest. Grimes told police he knew a homeless person was shot, according to the report. Police said Grimes changed his story multiple times and asked for a lawyer.
The report said police recovered the white bag that Grimes discarded and found a tan sun hat, with an American flag design on the bottom of the brim, and dark green shoes with white soles.
“Both appeared to be the same as worn by the suspect from video surveillance,” the report said.
Grimes later said to police in an unprovoked statement that he is “not a violent man, but he was pushed to his limit,” according to the report.
“Due to the evidence at the scene, the video surveillance, the fact that Grimes discarded clothing worn by the suspect after seeing police,” the Metropolitan Police Department arrest report said, “it is reasonable to believe that Grimes is the suspect who shot and killed Henry Bias.”
Grimes made an initial appearance in Las Vegas Justice Court on Thursday and remained in custody at the Clark County Detention Center, according to online records. An attorney is not listed on Grimes’ case overview and Grimes is due back in court Wednesday for a status check.
