“Tori’s artwork adds character, creativity, and a sense of pride to a place our residents can enjoy for years to come." -- Armada Township Supervisor Chris Krotche.
Officials from Armada Township, the Detroit Institute of Arts and others lauded the beauty and message of a new mural in the township Tuesday by a Ferndale-based artist.
The mural, “Meet Me in Armada,” located on a wall of the township hall on East Main Street, was created by muralist Tori Kurtzhals as part of the DIA Partners in Public Art program, the DIA said in a press release.
“This mural is a celebration of Armada’s connection to the land and the natural beauty that surrounds it,” Kurtzhals said in the release. “I’ve always loved making the trip out to Armada during u-pick season, so getting the opportunity to create a piece inspired by the orchards, traditions, and memories that make this area special felt especially meaningful to me.
“I’m really grateful to Armada Township and the DIA for trusting me with this project and for making public art accessible in communities like Armada through programs like Partners in Public Art.” .
County Executive Mark Hackel, who attended the event, said on Facebook, “The mural does a wonderful job of capturing the character and essence of the Armada community.”

MACOMB COUNTY EXECUTIVE OFFICE PHOTOThrough the program, made possible by the tri-county millages, the DIA works with communities in Macomb, Oakland and Wayne counties to create locally driven, highly visible public murals, DIA officials said. Input is gathered from the community which the artist uses to create themes and ideas for the mural design, reflecting the spirit and values of each community.
“We are delighted to partner with the Armada Township for our 2026 Partners in Public Art program,” said Julie McFarland, executive director of public affairs and community engagement at the DIA. “The mural celebrates the unique character and spirit of the community, and we are proud to help bring a new public artwork to Armada Township.”
Township Supervisor Chris Krotche thanked the DIA for selecting Armada for the work.
“We are truly honored to be part of this effort and grateful for the opportunity to bring such a beautiful and meaningful addition to our community,” Krotche said. “Tori’s artwork adds character, creativity, and a sense of pride to a place our residents can enjoy for years to come.”
