The restored Spanish Colonial Revival residence retains much of its original character.

There’s a certain kind of house that feels like it has always been there. Ross Cassidy’s Los Angeles residence, a 1927 Spanish Colonial Revival in the Hollywood Hills, has that quality.

Cassidy, an interior designer, and his partner, real estate agent Jed Weisman, spent years looking for the right house before ultimately buying this one in 2020 for $3.3 million, records show. They then spent about two and a half years renovating, with the goal of updating it without stripping away what made it special in the first place. Now, the nearly 5,100-square-foot property is up for grabs, with Weisman handling the $8 million listing through Christie’s International Real Estate Southern California.

“My passion is restoring important historical houses and making them work in the modern world,” Cassidy tells Robb Report. He describes the home as a “100-year-old treasure” with the character of old Hollywood but with larger closets and generous bathrooms.

The formal dining room opens toward the garden, and the modern chef’s kitchen pairs sage green and lustrous wood cabinetry with marble counters. A row of windows brings natural light into the space. The second-floor primary bedroom has a yellow upholstered bed, mirrored panels, and views of the surrounding trees. There are four additional bedroom suites, including one on the main level.

The renovation reworked the original layout. A former guest room that could only be reached from outside became the dining room, while a double-height library was divided into two levels, with the family room now below the primary suite.

The carefully calibrated balance between modern updates and historic character is evident throughout. The house retains its leaded windows, wrought-iron railings, marble-framed doorways, carved ceilings, hand-painted beams, and a mix of terrazzo, terracotta, and narrow-plank oak floors. The living room has a carved ceiling and fireplace, while the family room centers on a marble fireplace alongside olive-green sofas.

A partially-recessed pool trimmed in rusticated stone sits among clipped hedges, mature trees, and citrus plants. A ramada covers an outdoor seating area with a raised-hearth fireplace, while a separate bungalow above the garage has another bedroom and full bathroom.

“They aren’t making more century-old houses in LA,” Cassidy says. “So it’s my goal to honor, preserve, and rehabilitate the ones we have.” He adds that designing your own home comes with its own freedom. “Designers’ own homes are always their best work because we are able to go much deeper into the details and minutiae.”
