Real Madrid's Trent Alexander-Arnold was also named in Thomas Tuchel squad after being overlooked in the summer.

Thomas Tuchel claims that ’99.9 per cent’ of the England fans he has met since the World Cup have not even mentioned the crushing semi-final loss to Argentina in Atlanta.
Despite the fact that England went in to retreat after taking the lead against Lionel Messi & Co to lose 2-1, Tuchel says that supporters he meets only want to talk about the positives.
Tuchel was heavily criticised for defensive substitutions in the second half that night but said: ‘I know 99.9 per cent of the fans don't talk to me about substitutions, tactical tweaks or tactical details.
‘They speak about where they watched the Mexico game, and they speak about the second-half energy of the Croatia match.
‘They speak about how nerve-racking it was to watch our match against Congo and where they celebrated.
‘This is the feedback I get. This is what we created, and how it should be.’
Subsequently pressed on the matter, Tuchel admitted he had ‘some bad stuff between the Argentina game and France third place game’ but this is understood to have been a reference to media or social media comments.
Apart from that Tuchel feels he has the support of the country ahead of a Nations League campaign that begins with a home game against World Champions Spain a week today.
Trent Alexander-Arnold was the surprise name in Tuchel’s 27-man squad. The Real Madrid star hasn’t played for England since June 2025 but has been recalled after fellow right-backs Reece James, Djed Spence and Ben White all picked up injuries.
Cole Palmer, meanwhile, is also back after recovering form and fitness at Chelsea.
The England manager said: ‘Their quality is undisputed but they need to show it.’
Tuchel said in his opening England press conference two years ago that the former Liverpool player had to always concentrate on his defending.
Asked last night whether he offered enough defensively, Tuchel said: ‘He has to, he has to. It’s necessary.
‘My conviction is that he will but he has no choice.’ Tuchel said he initially hoped to choose a similar squad to his World Cup one only for injuries to force his hand.
As a result there are also call-ups for Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite and Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott along with Leeds forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
One player facing an almost impossible road back is Harry Maguire. The Manchester United defender Tweeted about his exclusion from the World Cup squad before it had even been announced last May while his mother said on social media she was ‘absolutely disgusted’ by the decision.
Asked whether the door was now closed on Maguire, Tuchel said: ‘I will not hold it against him for the rest of his life, because I'm not that type of person.
‘I can forget easily and quickly, but I didn't like it and it doesn't help.’

Trent Alexander-Arnold has been handed a surprise recall as well as Cole Palmer, but there is still no place for Phil Foden despite Man City's promising start to the season.
Morgan Gibbs-White will also feel hard done by after missing out again, while Alex Scott and Myles Lewis-Skelly make the cut in midfield.
Ollie Watkins' move to Saudi Arabia appears not to have done him any favours as in-form Dominic Calvert-Lewin comes in as a deputy to Harry Kane.
Jarrod Branthwaite, Lewis Hall and Rio Ngumoha have also earned call-ups, with Tuchel giving them a chance to show what they're made of.
FULL SQUAD:

IAN LADYMAN AT WEMBLEY:
So that was a lot of chat with the England manager.
But my main take at the moment is that Tuchel seems a bit conflicted about he wants his team to play.
One minute he is talking about trying to play like Spain ‘for ten minutes’ and then he suggests maybe we should ‘embrace the chaos’ of a more rudimentary style.
So which is to be Thomas?
We play the world champions at Wembley a week tomorrow so some solutions certainly need to be found.

Arsenal boast the most England players selected by Thomas Tuchel this time around, with Manchester City unsurprisingly second.
Everton, Man United, Chelsea, Leeds, Newcastle and Real Madrid all have two players selected meanwhile, with Trent Alexander-Arnold now joining stalwart midfielder Jude Bellingham from the Bernabeu.

Time may have healed some World Cup wounds but England's devastating collapse against Argentina will continue to follow Thomas Tuchel around throughout this Nations League campaign.
It felt as though a first World Cup final since 1966 was within touching distance, but tactical negativity - brought in part out of Tuchel's substitutions - ultimately saw England throw it away.
Admitting he has been scarred and went through sleepless night, Tuchel urged that he has learned from the experience.
He said:
It’s not the first time you get a scar, it’s not the first time you get sleepless nights. It’s part of the beauty of sports, you can’t always win.The whole campaign felt different, it’s a new level of pressure. It’s comparable with the Champions League final, but it’s like the round of 32. Knockout football and one match can be very demanding and brutal.
The experience of unfortunately losing finals helps, because it’s what makes me me and that this is possible, but knowing that you have to wait four years is like, yeah.
The beauty and the pain of having the bronze medal match was not having the abrupt end.

Thomas Tuchel admitted his decision to include Jarrad Branthwaite over Levi Colwill was a 51% call.
Both centre-halves are vying for the left-sided role in England's back-line, but Tuchel has narrowly given the edge to the Everton man.
Colwill, whose progress has also been hampered with injuries of late, has started the season solidly under new Chelsea boss Xabi Alonso, but his form wasn't enough to earn a call-up.
Explaining the call, Tuchel said:
I wanted to give Jarrad a chance. It was a 51% decision on Jarrad.I don't have a clear picture on what he is all about, and have a very clear picture on what Levi can bring us.
So it seems this is Branthwaite's big opportunity to show what he can do. Fail to impress and he may be waiting a while for a recall.

Despite going to the World Cup, Kobbie Mainoo didn't play a single minute of England's campaign, much to the frustration and disappointment of the Man United star.
Well, Mainoo is back within England's ranks again - and Tuchel was asked whether he'll be given enough gametime to show what he can do this time around.
Insisting Mainoo 'didn't put a foot wrong' in World Cup training, Tuchel has vowed to make it his duty to reward him.
He said:
I expect him to be on the pitch and it’s my duty to get him on the pitch. That was totally on me.He didn’t put a foot wrong during the World Cup.
We trusted them more than we trusted Kobbie. It was difficult for him. It was on me.
It’s my responsibility to reward him for that.

One player who has been given his flowers is Dominic Calvert-Lewin. The in-form Leeds striker has been banging in the goals for over a year now and he's finally been given a chance to deputise Harry Kane as England's second-choice striker.
Four goals in six games across all competitions so far has helped give him the edge over the likes of Ollie Watkins, Danny Welbeck, Ivan Toney and Liam Delap - and he'll be hoping to stake a claim on the England role long-term.
Calvert-Lewin's strength in the air is a handy perk when chasing a game - as he can be thrown on alongside Kane if England need to go more direct - and his eagerness to press from the front is something Tuchel will be a fan of.
Goals are the currency for strikers though, and if he can net a couple on international duty, it'll go a long way.

When reporters asked Thomas Tuchel why Morgan Gibbs-White was again excluded from his England squad, the German said it makes no sense having three, four or five number 10s.
A fair point perhaps, but Gibbs-White and those backing his corner will argue that he deserves to be in there regardless. The Nottingham Forest midfielder has 18 goal contributions in 2026, compared to Cole Palmer's 12 and Eberechi Eze's three.
Gibbs-White's partner Britney De Villiers has taken matters into her own hands and hit out at Tuchel's decision on her Instagram story this morning.
What do you think? Does Gibbs-White deserve to be there?

IAN LADYMAN AT WEMBLEY:
Tuchel says 99.9 percent of people he meets 'don't talk to me about my subs against Argentina'.
He says they want to talk about 'Mexico, Congo and the second half against Croatia'.
Mmmm... I am not sure I believe this.

While returns for Palmer and Alexander-Arnold will undoubtedly hog the headlines, Jarrad Branthwaite's England recall should not go unnoticed.
England have been crying out for an imposing, left-footed centre-half for years and Branthwaite appeared to fit that mold perfectly, until a series of troubling injuries hampered his gametime.
Marc Guehi will likely stay England's first-choice left-sided centre-back for now, but having Branthwaite back fully fit is a bonus for the German.
Here's what Branthwaite told Everton after his 'dream' England recall:

Tuchel saying the nature of English football does not lend itself to tournaments.
'It's not economical,' he said.
That's a bit strange coming from a manager who said at the start of his reign that he wanted to build an England team playing Premier League football.

The England manager added that Cole Palmer's goal contributions played a key role in his return - and that Trent Alexander-Arnold was 'never off the list' despite his World Cup snub.
They had a good start to the season. They never did something wrong. We just chose different players. So now it is a new competition, some players, some positions have more injuries, some have less injuries. But, Cole has his start that he always had but he has his numbers back, he has his assists back, he has decisive goals back so that is why he is in the squad. I think he has a point to prove and the same goes for Trent.
He was never off the list, he was never non-selectable for us and it is his chance to show, come to camp and be the best version of himself. He had a good start in two positions for Real Madrid and he comes as a right-back for us.
