Welcome to Terror on Tubi!

Every month, I’ll make my way through the dark halls of Terror on Tubi, searching for five horror films you don’t want to miss on the streamer.

This month’s selections have a chilly autumn vibe to help you settle into the creepiest (and greatest) season of the year. From slashers to werewolves and a ghoulish remake, these movies (mostly) have the Halloween treats…even if they aren’t all set during October.

Check them out below, if you dare. And remember, Terror on Tubi has over 13,000 hours of horror content. It’s completely free, and no sign-up is necessary. For horror fans, it’s heaven.

Halloween II (2009) Courtesy of Paramount Pictures

I won’t die on the hill that Rob Zombie’s Halloween II is a good movie, actually. But I don’t mind trick-or-treating there.

Zombie’s sequel picks up with a traumatized Laurie Strode (Scout Taylor-Compton). One year after her brother’s killing spree on Halloween night, Michael Myers (Tyler Mane) returns to finish what he started.

John Carpenter may not love the sibling connection between Laurie and Michael, but Zombie fully embraces it here. Rather than merely escape Michael, his sister must also contend with her breaking mind, haunted by her brother and the ghostly image of her mother. It’s a bloody, mean, surreal trip through the scariest night of the year, and one of the more fascinating franchise entries because of it.

Intruder (1989) IntruderCourtesy of MGM

And you thought your job sucked.

After supermarket owners announce they’re selling the store, the crew suddenly finds themselves without work. But someone won’t let them go so easily. One last night on the job soon turns from bad to worse when a killer begins picking off the employees one by one in gruesome fashion.

Arriving on the far end of the 80s slasher craze, Intruder didn’t immediately catch the attention it deserves. A cult following has gathered over the years, though, because this bloody slasher pic has the goods. Entertaining characters, heaps of gore, and a good, shocking twist or two. Even better? It features both Ted and Sam Raimi!

Night of the Living Dead (1990) Courtesy of Sony Pictures Entertainment

Makeup effects legend Tom Savini directed exactly one feature horror film…and it’s a banger.

In this update of George Romero’s classic, the set-up remains the same. When the dead return to life, a group of strangers takes shelter in a farmhouse. But a few boarded-up windows won’t keep the flesh-hungry zombies out for long.

Savini’s Night of the Living Dead doesn’t make my list of remakes that top the original. Still, the filmmaker nails the atmospheric dread. Shocking no one, the zombies look fantastic and are much scarier than Romero’s ghouls. The big change here puts Barbara (Patricia Tallman) at the forefront of the tale. No longer the whimpering woman in the corner of the original, she proves herself a leader who refuses to crumble in the face of horror. And, oh, does she have a satisfying moment or two. Did I mention Tony Todd plays Ben? Yeah, this remake deserves a lot more love.

Silver Bullet Stephen King Silver BulletCourtesy of Paramount Pictures

Fanny from Scare Me may not think much of Silver Bullet—how dare she—but this werewolf movie is perfect for any time of the year.

Adapted by Stephen King from his novella, Cycle of the Werewolf, we find ourselves in a small town where a terrible murder has just been committed. Soon, more bodies pile up…all during a full moon. Disabled boy Marty (Corey Haim) thinks a werewolf is responsible. One dark, 4th of July night, he comes face to face with his proof. But can he uncover the beast’s identity, or will the monster find him first?

Yes, my love of werewolf movies makes me a little biased here. But that doesn’t mean Silver Bullet isn’t well worth ripping into like a juicy lamb. From an early age, Marty was a hero of mine, a brave, good kid with an endearing performance from Haim. Throw in a script by Stephen King, loads of practical werewolf effects, and an energetic Gary Busey as Uncle Red, and you have a hairy shocker that’s one of the best in the sub-genre.

Would You Rather Courtesy of IFC Midnight

Would You Rather was a fun party game when I was a teenager…even though it usually ended up in embarrassing photos that still haunt the internet somewhere. David Guy Levy’s take on the game is anything but.

The always great Brittany Snow stars as Iris, a woman desperate for money after she’s been left to take care of her cancer-stricken younger brother. Into her life walks billionaire Shepard Lambrick (Jeffrey Combs), who promises to pay for her brother’s surgery…if she wins a simple game of Would You Rather. The catch? Only one contestant will walk away alive.

A tale that pits the poor working class against a monstrous billionaire, played with sinister glee by Combs, Would You Rather has aged like a fine wine. Snow is a magnet on screen, compelling in her portrayal of a woman willing to go to extreme lengths to save her brother. I’m a sucker for Saw-like challenges that pit people against one another and reveal who they truly are. And what Would You Rather reveals are some awful truths about society, wealth, and the cruelty imposed by those at the top.

Find these and more horror picks on Terror on Tubi, and check back next month for five more titles worth screaming about.
