The op-ed, “Stop mourning Hong Kong. It’s evolving, not dying” (August 13), is right to argue that nostalgia should not be the standard by which we judge Hong Kong’s future. It rightly reminded us that the city has reinvented itself many times. The Hong Kong of 2018 will not return, just as the Hong Kong of my childhood disappeared long before then.

But there is another side to nostalgia worth considering.
