  • The 2027 Mini Countryman S All4 Untamed Edition debuts as a new off-road-themed SUV.
  • A set of 19-inch wheels and Pirelli Scorpion all-terrain tires combine with a lifted suspension to provide nearly an extra inch of ground clearance.
  • An optional rooftop tent designed in partnership with Italian brand Autohome offers a quick campsite.

Despite famously navigating staircases in The Italian Job and claiming podiums in real-life rallies from Monte Carlo to Dakar, Mini hasn’t pursued the off-road market with its customer cars. For 2027, Mini is introducing a version of its saucy compact crossover, the Countryman, now with more emphasis on the “country” part.

The 2027 Mini Countryman Untamed Edition will be available on Countryman S All4 and SE in North America, and only on the electric Countryman E and SE in Europe. There is no mention of the John Cooper Works being available in an Untamed trim, so the engine choices for the Untamed will be the Countryman S’s 241-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder with seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and standard all-wheel drive or the SE’s 308-hp dual-electric-motor setup.

We'll be driving the Countryman Untamed to see exactly how wild it gets, but like many small SUVs given the outdoorsy treatment, the Untamed looks better suited for light off-roading than rock crawling. There are a few mechanical changes to increase capability, including a suspension lift that raises the car by 0.6 inch, paired with new 19-inch alloy wheels and Pirelli Scorpion all-terrain tires for a total increase in ground clearance of 0.8 inch.

Along with more sunshine beneath the undercarriage, the Untamed gets a textured coating along its wheel arches, sills, and hood to minimize scratches and chips, and additional underbody protection. The ABS braking, DSC traction management, and steering have been retuned to work with the changed geometry and all-terrain rubber.

On the cosmetic side, the Untamed stands apart from the road-focused Countryman with a redesigned front grille in an exclusive dark-gray finish. The same finish, called Dark Steel, can be found on badges and trim.

Mini designers looked to the mountains for color inspiration, offering exterior paint in rocky gray, icy blues and whites, and a new matte finish option called Frozen Nomad Blue. Roof finishes are available in white or black. An additional roof option is offered in the form of a pop-up rooftop tent designed in partnership with the Italian camping company Autohome. The Countryman’s roof is rated to support 165 pounds while driving and up to 661 pounds while parked, making it a workable camping solution for two folks who like each other. The Untamed comes standard with a tow hitch and is rated to 3500 pounds.

The outdoors come indoors in the Countryman’s interior with an Untamed-only blue interior with a mountain logo on the seatbacks. There are also optional upholstery choices of brown and black. Metal-look accents match the exterior in Dark Steel. The center console has a redesigned storage segment with elastic straps and rounded edges. Rubber floor mats and cargo mats make for easy cleanup after a hike.

The 2027 Mini Countryman S All4 Untamed Edition will start at $45,250; pricing for the all-electric SE All4 Untamed is yet to be announced. Production is set to begin on the Untamed in late 2026, with a launch planned for early 2027.

Like many girls, she planned to be a vet-astronaut-artist, and came closest to that last one by attending UCLA art school. She painted images of cars, but did not own one.
