Showdown of Supercharged Stangs: Dark Horse SC vs. GTD vs. GT500

Дата публикации: 06-10-2026 10:00:00

We compare test numbers for the most potent Mustangs to date to see which is the quickest, grippiest, and stops shortest.

  • After testing a 2026 Ford Mustang Dark Horse SC, we’re comparing its results against the 2025 Mustang GTD and 2020 Mustang Shelby GT500.
  • The Dark Horse SC beats the defunct GT500 to 60 mph by more than a half-second, though it’s two-tenths slower than the mightier GTD.
  • All three Mustangs we tested were equipped with the most track-focused equipment packages that Ford offers.

Welcome to Car and Driver's Testing Hub, where we zoom in on the test numbers. We've been pushing vehicles to their limits since 1956 to provide objective data to bolster our subjective impressions (you can see how we test here).

Ask any Ford employee, and they’ll tell you that the 2026 Mustang Dark Horse SC is not a direct successor to the now-retired Mustang Shelby GT500. If they’re high enough on the payroll, they may even say so without a wink and a nudge. But if it walks like a duck and quacks like it’s got a supercharged 5.2-liter V-8 under the hood, we’re pretty sure it’s a duck. Now that we’ve had the chance to strap some testing equipment to said duck—no one call PETA on us, please—we wanted to see how its test results stack up against the GT500 and the current king of the Mustangs, the GTD.

Acceleration

Unsurprisingly, given that it has more horsepower (795 versus 760), the Dark Horse SC trounces the Shelby in the sprint to 60 mph. The SC starts ahead of the GT500 and never looks back. It reaches 30 mph in 1.3 seconds, 60 mph in three flat, 100 mph in 6.3 seconds, and crosses the quarter-mile in 10.8 seconds at 134 mph. The GT500 trails by four-tenths to 30 mph, six-tenths to 60, eight-tenths to 100, and six-tenths at the quarter-mile marker, which it manages in 11.4 seconds at 132 mph.

Despite being the heaviest of the bunch (4404 pounds for the GTD, 4099 for the SC, and 4059 for the GT500), the 815-hp GTD sails through each goalpost ahead of its lesser pony car siblings. The ultimate Mustang launches to 30 mph in 1.2 seconds, 60 mph in 2.8 seconds, 100 mph in 6.1 seconds, and through the quarter-mile in just 10.6 seconds at 133 mph. The GTD takes gold when it comes to our acceleration tests, with the Dark Horse SC and GT500 claiming silver and bronze, respectively.

Stopping Power

Despite weighing more than two tons, stopping the GT500 is a relatively mundane experience. Riding on Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires, a stop from 70 mph is over in 142 feet, while a stop from 100 mph is done in 279 feet. The Dark Horse SC’s Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2R tires do wonders when you stomp on the left pedal. The SC rushes to a halt in just 131 feet from 70 mph and just 261 feet from 100 mph. Despite carrying around the equivalent of about one extra NFL offensive lineman compared with the SC, the GTD’s much meatier Cup 2Rs help to slow it down in just 132 feet from 70 mph and 262 feet from 100 mph. That means the Dark Horse ekes out a win in this category.

Cornering Grip

Around our skidpad, the Dark Horse SC we tested wasn’t set up in its grippiest configuration. While the GT500 and GTD were outfitted with substantial camber adjustments to maximize lateral grip, this particular Stang was set up with straight-line speed in mind. That’s not to say it was left wanting for grip, though. Equipped with 305/30ZR-20 front and 315/30ZR-20 rear tires, the SC achieved 1.06 g’s of grip on our skidpad. The Shelby, wearing the same size rubber, gave way at 1.13 g’s. The GTD, with its 325/30ZR-20 front and 345/30ZR-20 rear Sport Cup 2R tires, managed a whopping 1.17 g’s. The finishing order for cornering grip goes GTD first, GT500 second, and Dark Horse SC last.

And the Winner Is . . .

The Dark Horse SC is by no means a thrifty purchase, but it’s also not the most expensive car in this comparison (when comparing their prices when new). An unoptioned SC coupe stickers for $108,085, while adding the Track Pack brings that figure all the way to $144,585. The GTD, on the other hand, starts at $327,960, while our test model was valued at $367,960. In 2020 dollars, the GT500 was just $92,495; accounting for inflation would put our tester at $120,572.

Unlike the GT500 and GTD, though, the Dark Horse SC offers a topless version that gives you unfiltered access to its supercharged V-8 soundtrack. Whether or not that makes it the most desirable option among the most powerful Mustangs is up for debate. Still, for those keeping score, the most expensive Stang also finished with the best overall results. It was the quickest, and while it didn’t stop quite as short as the Dark Horse SC, it placed first in our skidpad test instead of last like the latter.
