But the Gophers are still waiting for a court ruling from Colorado to confirm the forward will get a fifth year of eligibility.

Cade Tyson is back, for now.

The Gophers men’s basketball program announced Tuesday the 6-foot-7 wing who led the U in scoring last year has rejoined the team in preparation for the 2026-27 season.

Tyson has enrolled in classes and will practice with the team while his full playing status is determined, the U said. He is currently ineligible, per a court ruling in Colorado.

“We’re excited to have Cade rejoin our program,” head coach Niko Medved said in a statement. “We’re here to support him in any way we can through this process and are looking forward to having Cade around the facility and program.”

A member of the class of 2022, Tyson played four collegiate seasons across four years and has been a part of a federal class action lawsuit in Colorado alleging they have been wronged by not being included in the NCAA’s new eligibility rule allowing five years to play five seasons.

In late July, a judge issued an injunction in Wisne v. NCAA that allowed the athletes in the Class of 2022 to pursue fifth years. But on Aug. 21, the Tenth Circuit granted the NCAA’s stay, restoring the NCAA’s new eligibility rule pending an appeal.

“So much is just out of our hands,” Medved told reporters last week at the Minnesota State Fair. “… It’s in the courts. Who knows what the timeline is going to be? To be honest, a lot of these players really have a difficult decision to make. Which avenue do they want to take?

“Do they want to explore sticking this out and see if they get eligible, or do they just want to punt and go play professionally?”

Tyson, a native of Monroe, N.C., wants more college hoops after he led the Gophers, and was sixth in the Big Ten, with a 19.6-point average per game last season.

The Gophers currently have 15 players on the roster, which was believed to be the roster cap and a hurdle for Tyson’s possible return. But the U told the Pioneer Press last week that the House vs. NCAA settlement allows for Designated Student-Athletes (DSAs) who don’t count against cap. So, Minnesota technically has room for Tyson on the roster.

The Gophers are also believed to have Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) compensation available for Tyson.

Tyson played his first two seasons at Belmont, followed by one each at North Carolina and Minnesota. In those four years, the veteran scored 1,621 points, made 213 3-pointers and grabbed 528 rebounds in 124 games.
