If Prime Video acquires it, they’ll only get the US rights; I don't think they'll get the global rights.

It will be interesting to see the ratings numbers once they come out. These awards shows seem to be dying the death in recent years. Maybe streaming them makes better financial sense.

when this happens it will be the end of the upper class style tv awards show on the big 3 era

like how the oscars used to be on any of the big 3 channels since the 1950s and now since 2024 its on streaming even thought its still on one of the big 3 but its mostly focusing on streaming

It’s a global deal; although Disney+ has been broadcasting the Oscars in Türkiye for a few years, no one was broadcasting the Emmys. Now, thanks to this agreement, they will be broadcast here too—for at least six years.

Do people still watch that crap?

"Id like to thank the Academy, and now here's a tear-filled speech about a social issue you should be caring about." Pfflt.

I hadn't read the full article before, but I have now; according to the agreement, other Emmy awards produced by the TV Academy are also included in the scope. They also noted that the TV Academy is on a path to merge with NATAS—which organizes the Daytime Emmys—and that they are considering a licensing agreement for the Daytime Emmys as well following the merger. The merger is scheduled to be finalized by mid-2027.

I haven't watched in ages, simply because I don't know any of the shows and performers that are nominated.
Back when there were only three networks, you knew the majority of the nominees.
Now, with most of the programs on streaming, I can't keep up anymore.

I imagine there's still a large audience, but that demographic would be older, the kind of demographic that grew up watching on basic cable. It is ironic then for it to move to a paid service where it has a chance to dwindle the numbers even further as access becomes more exclusive.

So, do you have a subscription to any digital platform?

Paramount Plus, but only when Star Trek is on.
I binge watch then cancel.

The cost of the deal between the Oscar Academy and YouTube reportedly exceeds $100 million. In comparison, the agreement between the TV Academy and Prime Video is said to be in the $15–20 million range. In other words, they secured a bargain—and it’s a global deal, too.

I suppose you don't have much time or interest in subscribing to multiple platforms and watching content from genres other than science fiction.

That may be. It may sound good on paper, even. But the reality is that they start to compete with a fragmented base of multiple services when it's put behind a paywall. So, I will say good luck to them.

I was mistaken; they reached an agreement worth $20 million annually—a total of $120 million over six years.

I am the same. Also applies to the Oscars. I was visiting my brother and his wife shortly before this years Oscars ceremony. They both seemed really surprised when I said I could not remember when I last watched.

For me the disinterest in Awards is certainly lack of familiarity of the nominated. Which escalated over the years. But also understanding how these things are selected. These are the equivalent of industry trade shows or conventions. Think of plumbers voting on who makes the best pipes. Etc, etc.

Originally there was a huge overlap in what the entertainment industry rewarded and the public liked. But that is no longer the case.

Also if you really think about the process of nominations and voting - it’s much to do about nothing. We have no idea how many votes anyone gets. There could be one vote between the winners and the “runners up” we do not think of it that way. It’s framed as a foot race to generate interest. Sure the very idea of these things is to generate attention to things that might not get it otherwise. But tv or movies - often the first the general public hears of them at all - is potential awards. So they exist to get awards. Certainly on some level. Given the huge money being put into stuff and how hard it’s to get anything made now - they are crafting products that can get award attention.

So the illusion that they are making art for the sake of it and the best art wins... lots BS. These awards shows are as much a publicity campaign as a summer blockbuster gets. Just presented in a different way.

That's a good explanation and I agree, and I feel at times like they may be preaching to a choir; certainly not the viewers outside the venue's audience, but rather their peers.

Many of the movie review channels I follow on YouTube watch and discuss Oscar-nominated films every year during the awards season, which allows them to stay in the loop. As for TV shows, however, you have to constantly subscribe to and watch new content. There are channels I follow that enjoy watching and reviewing shows—especially prestigious ones. Most of the people behind them love sci-fi but also watch productions from other genres. Of course, everyone has different tastes, and not everyone has a YouTube channel.

As for TV shows, however, you have to constantly subscribe to and watch new content.

Yeah, that's definitely part of the problem, and it sets forward a feedback loop, especially now that the Emmys will be on an Amazon owned service. It also creates a sort of self-reinforcement, and it kind of makes me wonder whether they'll still be unbiased.
