Scientists Have Changed the Definition of Dyslexia After 23 Years — and It Could Help Millions of Children

The new definition challenges outdated IQ-based assessments and urges schools to identify struggling readers earlier.

For more than 20 years, some children with dyslexia may have been denied the help they needed. Not because they couldn’t read, but because they didn’t fit an outdated definition. Now, that’s finally changing.

Imagine struggling to read, falling behind your classmates, and being told you don’t qualify for extra help because your IQ score doesn’t fit a particular formula.

For years, some schools and specialists relied on precisely this kind of assessment. Children whose reading scores weren’t sufficiently far below their intelligence scores could miss out on a dyslexia diagnosis and the support that came with it.

“There were many children that came close to that definition, but just missed that 15-point difference by one point. Because of that, they were not allowed further help,” said R. Malatesha Joshi, an educational psychologist at Texas A&M University, in a university announcement.

Not an Intelligence Problem

Dyslexia is a learning disability that makes it persistently difficult to read or spell words accurately or fluently. It has nothing to do with laziness or a lack of effort, and it can affect people across a wide range of intellectual abilities.

The old definition described dyslexia as difficulties with reading that were often unexpected given a person’s other cognitive abilities. Although it never explicitly required a particular IQ gap, its wording reflected a longstanding approach to assessment that compared intelligence and reading scores.

Under this approach, a child who performed poorly on both an intelligence test and a reading test might not be identified as dyslexic, even if they had substantial reading difficulties. The assumption was that dyslexia involved reading performance that was unexpectedly poor compared with general intellectual ability.

Research has increasingly undermined that approach.

A complex condition

Children with dyslexia can have high, average, or below-average intelligence. Studies show that their reading difficulties and responses to specialized teaching are broadly similar regardless of IQ.

The revised definition instead emphasizes persistent difficulties with recognizing written words or spelling them, whether the problem involves accuracy, speed, or both. Importantly, those difficulties persist even when children receive instruction that works for their classmates.

It also recognizes that dyslexia exists along a spectrum rather than falling neatly into “those who have it and those who don’t.”

Another change concerns the underlying mechanisms. For years, dyslexia was closely associated with difficulties processing the sounds that make up spoken words, known as phonological processing. The new definition still recognizes these difficulties, along with problems identifying meaningful parts of words, but emphasizes that neither is universal.

The revised definition also takes a broader view of dyslexia’s causes. While the 2002 version emphasized its neurobiological origins, the new wording explicitly recognizes how genetic, neurobiological, and environmental influences interact.

In other words, dyslexia cannot be explained by a single faulty gene, brain difference, or educational experience. A child’s inherited predispositions, development, and learning environment can all influence how their reading difficulties emerge.

The revised definition also reflects research conducted beyond English-speaking countries.

English has notoriously inconsistent spelling rules. In languages such as Finnish, Spanish, Romanian, or Italian, children with dyslexia may read words accurately but unusually slowly. Research involving Chinese, Japanese, Hebrew, and Arabic has revealed further differences in how reading difficulties emerge. Assessments developed around English overlook difficulties in other languages.

Researchers have long described the “dyslexia paradox”: children often receive a diagnosis only after years of struggling, even though reading interventions tend to work best much earlier.

Some warning signs can emerge before formal reading instruction begins, including delayed language development or difficulties recognizing speech sounds. These signs aren’t proof of dyslexia, but they can identify children who might benefit from additional support.

Children don’t necessarily need a formal dyslexia diagnosis before receiving help. Schools can identify early reading difficulties, provide targeted instruction, and monitor whether children improve rather than waiting until they fall substantially behind.

The new definition still has to be implemented

The definition, approved in October 2025 and detailed in a paper published in April 2026, does not automatically change school policies or diagnostic requirements. Its authors stress that implementation remains the responsibility of educators, clinicians, and policymakers.

The science has been pointing in that direction for years. Now, one of the world’s most influential definitions of dyslexia has finally caught up.

The updated definition was published in the Annals of Dyslexia.
