Those iPhone 18 Pro production cuts are actually a really good sign

Apple’s stock took a bit of a tumble today following a report from Nikkei Asia that iPhone 18 Pro orders have been cut by as much as 20 percent due to “soft demand.” The publication cites the new phones’ prices as the main reason for the pullback, with Apple raising starting prices by $100 on the back on soaring memory and storage costs.
Of course, we’ve heard all this before. Every year, overseas outlets run stories about iPhone production cuts as Apple shifts orders to accommodate customer demand. Apple’s stock ebbs and flows on the news, and it generally ends up being much ado about nothing once Apple releases its quarterly earnings.
This year’s report holds considerably more weight due to the current market conditions, and there’s probably some truth to the notion that some people are holding off on buying a new phone. The iPhone 18 Pro isn’t a huge upgrade over the iPhone 17 Pro, the cheaper models don’t arrive until next year, and higher storage models are much more expensive than they have ever been. It all adds up to the likelihood that Apple is probably selling fewer iPhone Pro models than it did last year.
But there’s another possibility. In just a week, Apple will open preorders for the iPhone Duo, its first folding phone, which starts at $1,999. It’s the most expensive phone Apple has ever sold and is expected to sell out very quickly due to supply constraints, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see some models backordered through 2027 within hours of availability. So it would make sense that Apple is shifting 15-20 percent of production to its higher-margin, very popular new model.
If you look at the spec sheet, you’ll see that the iPhone 18 Pro and Duo share the same processor/memory and storage capacities, which happen to be the biggest reason for supply issues. So again, it would make sense for Apple to cut production for the iPhone 18 Pro to free up those components for the iPhone Duo.
Want more evidence that this isn’t a sign of doom and gloom? Back in 2017, it was reported on October 19 that Apple had cut production of the iPhone 8 by a whopping 50 percent due to what one carrier called “anemic” sales. That phone started at $699, while the iPhone X, which would go on sale a week later, started at $999, the first iPhone to break the thousand-dollar barrier. Sound familiar?
We reported late last month that Apple had already set up a pre-preorder page for the iPhone Duo that does little more than let you choose a color and storage size. It’s not about convenience or ease of ordering—Apple uses systems like these to gauge interest and demand for its devices, and something tells me that it’s going to be “blown away” by the demand for the iPhone Duo. So don’t worry, Apple is doing just fine.
