This editorial introduces the special issue of the Electronic Green Journal on the theme "Libraries and Sustainability: Past, Present, and Future." It briefly traces how libraries and archives moved from early environmental awareness and green libraries to today's broader sustainability movement, and it presents the six contributions in the issue. Together, the articles show that sustainability in libraries, archives, and other information institutions goes beyond environmental initiatives to include leadership, organizational culture, community engagement, ethical stewardship, and innovation.
