The gag has Adam Sandler sitting inside a bright yellow taxi on a Sardinian nudist beach as a completely naked extra walks up to the car. That’s the scene the Grown Ups 3 unit shot this week on the Costa Smeralda, where Netflix’s third film in the franchise has set up on the Gallura coast.

The nudity was in the plan from the start. Italian casting calls over the summer asked for “frequentatori di una spiaggia naturista,” warning that anyone picked would have to be available for scenes of partial nudity. Some extras also had to play volleyball.

That volleyball scene is where things got heated. Environmental groups objected after bulldozers cleared juniper and reeds at Cala Moresca in Golfo Aranci to compact the sand, inside a protected Site of Community Importance.

The mayor said the work had a regional impact assessment. During the shoot window, a night watchman was reportedly attacked with thrown stones.

Sandler had already been in the area. A few days before cameras rolled, he was spotted in Porto Cervo on a short family holiday, wearing white Crocs at one of the most expensive vacation spots in the world.

The Italy unit has been filming since September 21, with Turin standing in for Paris, and European scenes are due to wrap October 14. The reunion brings back Kevin James, Chris Rock, David Spade, Rob Schneider, Salma Hayek, Maya Rudolph and more, with Sadie and Sunny Sandler among the returning younger cast.

Rock gave the timing away on The Tonight Show on October 5. “We are shooting Grown Ups 3 right now, to be out probably next summer,” he said, adding, “We’re all back together” and “We’re having a great time.” Netflix hasn’t posted an official date, though a 2027 release has been the target.
